Shower Cubicle Recess

I ams starting to plan the layout of a new ensuite. To avoid the soil pipe the wall is going to have to be built out and this offers the opportunity to put a recess within the shower cubicle - somewhere to put shampoo bottles and the like.

This would be within the shower but on a wall adjacent to the shower head and controls. One concern is that even with a slight slope at the bottom this will get filled with water and remain wet. Does anyone have practical experience of this? Is my worry unfounded?

I wouldn’t. You can’t have a slope because your bottles will fall off. You are correct that the shelf will collect water and as they are tiles the grout will get mucky.

Personally l would just opt for a container that fits on the wall so the water can drip out of and that is big enough for all your bottles.

My niche is on the adjacent wall to the shower head with a slight slope and very little water collects. i think what little water is there probably comes off our hands when using shampoo etc. Our shower isn’t big either, just 1000x950 with a rainfall shower with pump so the water pressure is strong

There has always been a debate on which shower areas people prefer. Some like a wet room where the showering area is exposed and can be concealed with a shower panel and wont have a shower tray. Alternatively, you may like a walk in shower where a cubicle (or wet room space) is open with no need to open a door and will have a shower tray present. Others, prefer a cubicle which keeps the shower confined and segregated. whats you preference? It's always a personal preference so we would like to know what you like.

Thankyou for all your tips. We were looking for frameless ideally too as we think they look best. With a bit of searching around we have managed to find one that fit our budget. I chatted to a glass company too but looks like it would be too expensive for us for now. :)

Marc - these are absolutely stunning sketches! Sadly, the opportunity to move our WC has passed, so we can’t put the the shower in that corner :( I’m back to two options: 1. Keep same layout but with a shorter, 1600mm bath and bespoke shower built onto the end (only really feasible if I can find a fabricator or bathroom designer to make this happen), and some storage / fitted furniture around the WC/sink - pros are the separation of the two / luxe factor, con is that there’s nowhere for the laundry baskets https://www.duravit.co.uk/products/all_series/happy_d2.com-en.html?product=3167994 2. Full-size bath with bespoke storage at end of bath (opposite the door), with laundry and towel storage, etc) - pros are that we maximise storage and have a full size bath, plus we could save costs around the WC / sink by skipping the additional furniture, cons... no separate shower... Same bath but 1700x750. I’m feeling kind of ambivalent at this point, but the builders are back and will be ripping out the old one soon so need to pull the trigger and get this stuff ordered! Final round of thoughts?

I wouldn't worry unduly - size it such that it is only a single (trimmed if necessary) tile at the foot of the recess, construct it properly and there shouldn't be an issue. If the tile has some texture you can include a slight slope, but you will still get a little pooling and as Daisy indicates, expect to do a bit more grout cleaning in the area. You can get purpose build recesses in Schluter Kerdi Board (google them), but we ourselves rarely use them and just build ourselves.

Or get really nice shower tidies - many are easily removable for cleaning. I recommend those from Millers of Sweden for quality & longevity. Feel free to get in touch if we can provide further info.
