Can anyone give advice on seagrass and sisal carpets?

It's for an 1700's cottage near the coast in Hampshire. Cottage is very bright being L-shaped facing east, south and west with lots of windows. Will be for snug room, bedrooms and hallway. My main questions are maintenance (easy to vacuum with the texture?), how it feels under foot, colour (and how does it bear up to stains such as red wine, dark-coloured food?) and weave styles. Anyone have any particular pros and cons about either type?

I have it in my garden room. i think it’s sisal we have. Personally would not recommend it for stairs in a house. It’s smooth enough to walk on although not soft like a carpet but is very difficult to clean.

You are not supposed to get it wet so you can’t use a cleaner and spillages are hard to get up. l would get a normal carpet for your stairs but in a light colour then at least you can clean it if you get it dirty.

How polite of you Daisy. It is a poverty option from far away places in a bygone age. It belongs in the same category as straw mattresses.

Definitely hard surfaces all the way - you can refinish them when they get tired and are really practical for children/pets/outdoors lifestyle. We used a mixture of new polished concrete, exposed flagstones and original elm boards at our miner's cottages and don't find it cold or austere.

Yes be careful - use your local independant retailer - not a man in a van ! Or large national - to get a great choice and professional advise . And taking your wallpaper sample with you to the showroom will help you narrow down the choice and then you must take a few samples home ! Some shops may even let you take home rugs and runners to try ! Just a word of warning if you have any turns in your stairs and your looking at a strip carpet the pattern may not match - ask the shop to send someone around to measure and advice on your stairs - Parfitts carpets don't charge for this and will give you free professional advice.

Thank you so much for all your comments, really kind of you. Read Interiors will take your advice and get a wall mounted headboard, will start calling upholsterers tomorrow to get prices. Daisy, yes I do have a vax from the last house and the newer models are much better than the previous ones in terms of drying times. Vicki thanks for the name of the stretch valance as I couldn't find them on Google apart from on House of Fraser but they have limited colours and were pretty pricey at £100 or so! Angm, funnily enough I had this conversation with the carpet man as when I lifted the 50 year old carpet I noticed there was paper down and he explained that was why. He said it was also a good idea to tape any joins in underlay as well as the carpet but said a lot of fitters don't do this. Forzaitalia and Sam appreciate the insights and very interesting given your experiences Corbridge Interior design interesting point re rug and sizing I am still torn!!!! But I am probably moving towards carpets. I think the pics make the floor look better than it is! Noise wouldn't be a problem as we are in a bungalow, which is why I am concerned about the kids walking into their rooms on carpet having forgotten to take their shoes off! If it was upstairs I would definitely go with carpet! Aargh decisions, decisions!

It's understandable your builder is playing it down. You absolutely have to use an installer that know what they are doing. These natural products need 48 hours to acclimatise. I have it on mys stairs and would have it again. This is because I like the fact that it keeps its looks and doesn't seem to age or flatten. We don't tend to have a worry with drinks or spillages on stairs and this is another factor. I'm not sure I'd have it again in a lounge (for this reason) but would have it in a bedroom. It can fade slightly and needs to be acclimatised before fitting in case of shrinkage.

Can anyone give advice on seagrass and sisal carpets?
