I love subtle lighting and plan to use led strips with a baffle

How do i achieve this effect without spending lots of money?

It depend on what you consider to be a lot of money. The main feature there is the tray ceiling which means you will need a plaster, and electrician, a decorator and to buy £500 of lights. That total job is likely £2000 to £4500 depending on the size of the room.

To do it on the cheap... You can just buy some LED strips - you might need an electrician to install them if they need hard wiring in, or you could potentially plug them in. LED strips tend to come with a transformer, which is a box that you'll need to hide - you can bury it in the ceiling but if you do then you'll need to patch and skim the plaster. Instead of creating the plaster shelf, you can do that with mdf and paint it, or use a coving type of pre-made plaster detail to the edges leaving a gap for the LED strip to go in.

Personally I think you get a better result if you install a picture rail further below the ceiling height so the LED lighting strip sits on top of that and then you get the top of the wall and the whole ceiling lit and reflecting light down. There are lots of ways to do it really. Definitely bouncing light off your flat surfaces creates much more beautiful and overall better lighting than something like inset spotlights.

I thought I'd update everyone as to what we settled on as most of you won't have seen the finished post. Went went for Little Greene French Pale Grey on the walls and then a Grey Quartz worktop which had worked quite well. To stop it from being clinical, we opted for some textured wallpaper in the dining area which is Bala Storm (I think) from John Lewis. We then added some natural tones using a wooden table, and then Vitra chairs. Along with wooden fruit bowl etc. The main window will have wooden venetian blinds, and the bay windows will probably be done in a darker grey material as the perfect fit style blinds you find in conservatories

Hi We provide LED lamps in 2700K (very warm - yellow) , 3000K (warm white - yellow), 4000K (cool white - white will a hint of yellow), 5000K (soft daylight - very white), 6000K (daylight - more harsh white with hint of blue). Between different makes of LEDs - there will be variations too. What we have seen is that this is very much on personal preference and also how the light interacts with the colour of the units in your room. You should try some options if possible and see what you prefer. If you want to warm your room up go for warm white. If you want to have a sharper look go for cool whiite 4000K (we are seeing this is getting more popular), if you want seriously white then go for daylight (5-6000K). One thing we recommend against is using all in one LED fixture like the H2, because the LED market is moving fast, In 4 years time, if one fixture fails and this unit is not made anymore, it may be replaced with a non-matching fixture. With a LED GU10, you can just change the bulb without having to replace the fixture. Out Professional 7W DGP4 lamp has interchangeable lens (60 degree standard and 38 degrees optional) and really bright. Additionally, you should also check the under cabinet lighting. Hey! I've just seen the last comments. I live in Spain and there doesn't seem to be as much choice over here as there is in the USA after browsing at lot.. the Gubi light does look similar to one of the Tom Dixon beats shapes and I like the oriental vibe they give.. I am leaning toward that style for the pendants and will probably end up going with one. As for the splashback.. it's a nightmare.. I really have no idea.. I think dark like black and I think it will look to much and take away from the accents.. I think of grey and I think it's too boring and monocromatic.. I think of colour and I get scared lol.. really don't know and to be honest... I do regret going all white in the kitchen and not going with something darker or mid tone on the lowers at the back to ground it a bit more. I see so many kitchens on Instagram and Pinterest and I am always drawn to the darker ones.. but as I have a darker floor, I thought it would be too much. Anyway, it's done now and I guess we all have things we would do differently. I could always relacquer the lower doors quite cheaply if it came to it I guess. I really love Hague Blue by farrow and ball and have always wanted to use it but I think it wouldn't fit in anywhere and I'm not brave enough anyway🙈 Some good news is that I have finally managed to get the stonemason to change the island worktop which he destroyed after cleaning it with paint thinner.. after 4 months of fighting and the carpenter also finished up all the last details this week.. after 5 months. Stonemason has offered to give me a big discount on the splashback if I put a slab on the wall but really have no idea.. options are Dekton, Silestone, Neolith and Compac colours. By the way.. just saw this flat on pinterest and it reminded me of mine a bit but well done and with a more interesting kitchen.. trying to get some inspiration from it: https://hot-walls.ru/portfolio/сердце-столицы-99/ My favourite designs seem to all be Russian for some reason.. 😅

Everyone’s perception of a lot of money is different, ultimately it comes down to the space you are lighting. If it is a living room or entertainment space you may want to spend a little more to have the sen e of glamour, if it in a hallway you can get away with spending less. There are so many options for this type of lighting design, the best thing would be to speak to a professional and get quotes. It will save you on any disappointment when it’s done.
