Renovating Design Dilemma Kitchens

Need helping planning kitchen / dining room in Victorian terrace

We've just bought a house and we're trying to get some ideas for the kitchen and dining room.

We have thought about moving the kitchen to the dining room. I also like the idea of having sliding doors either in the current kitchen or in the dining room to bring in more light / have a more open feel. The yard is small. I like the open/light feel - not necessarily bothered about a huge kitchen although I do spend a lot of time in there. The house is just for 2 adults. My main goal is to get something that has been well designed

I think your instinct is right to swap the rooms over. The larger room could also fit a table in there potentially for dining and then the exsiting kitchen can become a snug room/second living space. You could open up that room with glass internal doors for light but also by adding glass doors to the yard and making it a lovely space to lounge in.

Without dimensions and orientation but based on similar renovations. Open up wall between kitchen and diner. Close up kitchen door. Change dining room window for door. Put washing machine and tumble dryer in store room to free up space and reduce noise in new kitchen/diner.

Hi all, Thanks for your comments. The vendor did leave behind the original doors for the house (and the cupboard doors). The flat was rented and so needed the fire doors pictured. We are planning on changing these and the tip of moving the hinges and light switch is great; thank you. Picture rails are definitely on the cards. a few of the other rooms have them already.We like the colour tone pictured below for the walls. Other suggestions always encouraged though. We'll keep the cupboard at the moment for convenience, but the plan is to either remove it entirely to reflect the other side of the chimney breast or put in fitted alcove storage on both sides, similar to the image below. We're wondering whether to strip the black paint off the fireplace-range to let the cast iron show and maybe re-paint the fireplace surround. We're also thinking about replacing the hearth . Keep those ideas coming :) Jamie

Thank you for your comments @drpepe101 and @rosemonde. The kitchen on the new plan is how our kitchen is now, the new plan only includes a small extension to the rear. The kitchen is not actually that dark, the back of the house and garden is SW facing so luckily we do get a good amount of light. It also does not feel cramped but that is due to the fact that it has been badly designed with hardly any cupboards - the fridge/freezer and our food is currently in the 'office' behind the kitchen! So I definitely agree that in order to create a kitchen in that space with all the cupboards we need - it will end feeling cramped. I did really want to take out the wall and chimney stack that separates the current kitchen from the office room behind it. We have had three different architects to view the property and they all felt that whilst not impossible it would be a very difficult job. The wall (which is the original exterior wall) is 2 feet thick and is built from large blocks of local stone, as well as having the chimney stack running through the centre all the way up to the roof. I am now thinking the best solution would be a side return extension either for just the width of the kitchen (sketch attached) which would not require planning i believe as it would be under 6m or possibly a longer side return. I wouldn't necessarily need a separate utility if we are widening the kitchen as i could incorporate a washing machine etc in to the kitchen. I would like a downstairs WC somewhere though. Currently our shoes/costs are stored in the cupboard under the stairs. If we went with this layout i would like to create a better opening between the kitchen and existing dining area and put pocket doors or similar in between the lounge and dining room so we can close off the lounge to make it feel cosier when we want to. How exciting! Everything you have detailed makes sense and is doable. A couple of things I'd suggest you consider: * Keeping some understairs storage is always really useful for coats/shoes etc as it helps clear the visual clutter. * Could you close up understairs existing door and add an additional section there and have pull out storage doors under the stairs * Then spin the utility/boiler room around into the existing dining space and make that a cloakroom/shower/utility * You can move the hall doorway as you have mentioned for through sight lines to the back? And this way you can go for double glass doors which will flood more light into the hallway. * Are you keeping the existing side door? If so you can potentially set your table with bench seating at the back wall up to the door or close off the door and give yourselves more wall space to work with. * The left wall would then be your extended bank of kitchen units and a slim island. * This then leave the doors opening to the garden at the back and the area in front for you to add in some relaxed seating for socialising. Apologies here for the apalling annotations but it gives you an idea! My questions would be:

How do you see yourself using the space?

Are you a couple that loves entertaining and having friends or family over, and if so what kind of space do you need to make that enjoyable?

Or do you have a hobby like baking, or do you have any other particular preferences and wishes for the kitchen space and how it works for you?

Plus how the dining space and the kitchen space work together?

These are the kinds of questions that I'd be considering to figure out what is going to be the best solution.
