Gardens landscape design Design Dilemma

Need landscape advice!

Help! I need landscape advice! We’re in S Florida and the only house without a palm tree in the front yard. Where should I put a palm tree in front yard?? Thanks!

This is a UK site You might be better off asking on a US forum as it may all be weather depending. We definitely don’t get your sunshine.

I wouldn’t put a palm tree in. They grow unruly & untidy. Be different!

FWIW, I found a designer here on Houzz and followed her jobs for a while. The job I copied was a $100k job-granted I didn't have all of the built in goodies, but I still got a lot of great ideas from her . Local landscapers in my area all do the same type of boring hedges I knew I was going for tropical jungle, so I encourage you to know your style and break free from the same old thing. I can't expect you to have my taste, but I'd still tell you to hide the shed behind the greenery :) also, know what are your native plants or which can easily be adapted to your growing zone. You can better assess your sun/shade situation once you take out the trees. I really had to learn how many hours of sun I was getting in what parts of the yard before I could determine what would grow best, including grass varieties.

Hi Martin, It depends on the soil type what variety of trees are best to plant. Was it a field before the house was been built? If it was its bound to be full of couch which takes time to get rid off. You might have to put up with a brown landscape until the summer as you will need to kept it sprayed the grass and weeds regrowth. Don't get into a hurry because you are moving in. Its best to do things slowly and with thought to what you want for a garden. Because it looks a large site according to the sketched plan you gave with the photos you need to divide the garden into separate areas to make it interesting and also with hedges or trees give privacy to your property. Last landscaping large gardens isn't cheap and sometimes the money isn't spent on the garden but in the house resulting a garden without much in it except lawn and no design. Garden designer or landscaper with design flare are best at creating your garden.

Have you got more garden beyond the concrete? Is this a sunny part of the garden? Are you going to put patio doors into this area? What you do to this area really depends in what you want to use it for- I imagine you have plenty to spend your money on- I would put decking over the concrete for a quick fix and add pots for colour

Don't use weedkiller in any circumstances, it pollutes your environment, kills insects , bees, mycelium etc and gets into the food chain. The best way to get rid of weeds is to alter your attitude to them . The definition of a weed is an unwanted plant. So ... here,s what to do.Dig out any large perrenial weeds. As previous comments , rotovate soil to remove any compaction. Add topsoil and add sharp sand. So here,s the thing , if you regularly mow your lawn i.e. once a week , it will kill the weeds, because unlike grass most plants cannot sustain being repeatedly cut back,and don,t worry about the odd weed here and there
