Recently Laid Patio Slabs Lifting

We’ve had a new patio laid by a builder and various slabs are over past few months start off rocking and eventually lifting, been stuck down again many times, lifted a new one that noticed was loose and this is what is underneath, any advice please on if this a normal way of laying? thanks

9 months agoIs the paving porcelain? If it is the it needs a wash painted on the underside - porcelain needs it to allow it to stick to the mortar. My patio paving was bedded onto a full bed of mortar, not just blobs. This is my porcelain paving on a full bed of mortar.

Comments (9)If replacing your patio is not something you want to consider, see if you can hire a Karcher hot washer from your local Hire shop and ask if they have a weed lance attachment for like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPH0qs_jKUA Research in Belgium has shown this to be one of the most efficient chemical free weed treatments for paving. If they don't have the special lance, the normal lance will do but turn the pressure down as you don't want to blast the mortar out from between the slabs. The temperature setting needs to be 95C at least. Looking at what you have there, it is the original old ex-council crazy paving, there is no sign of subsidence in the photos, so the substrate is good and well laid, it should last for decades. Comments (7)I had a patio built a couple of years ago and the quotes were very variable. I think alot depends on how much the company wants the work, how convenient your location is for them, how accessible the patio area is for moving things to and from the area etc. For example, my patio of 12 m sq involved very little digging out, access was reasonably easy and the quotes came in at £1200, £1700 and £3000 (all included them supplying the slabs). Therefore I'd suggest getting several traders round to quote so you know how much it would cost for the patio you want - the materials won't cost much, it's the labour time and disposal of spoil that bumps up the bill....See MorePatio advice and ideas please
Comments (39)@rach1922 - you are quite right that people harvesting Indian sandstone were exploited, as well as the use of child labour. For this very reason many UK suppliers have installed their own staff in their own quarries to ensure this does not happen. So basically there are companies who have total control to ensure the Stone is ethically harvested, such as Marshall’s, London Stone etc. I used Global Stone who supply many builders merchants. 9 months agoDid your builder use a whacking plate to press down the hardcore? If not, then sadly he has not followed the correct procedures and your paving will move and dislodge.
