Utilising Under the stairs

We are currently in the process of buying a house.
The kitchen is a little on the small side, but the adjoining hallway has under the stairs storage which I feel I could better utilise. The plan would be for this to provide a new home for the washing machine and dryer (I will need to sort some piping out) as well as storage for larger cleaning items and shoes lower down.

Currently there space is accessed through a full door and one smaller cupboard door.
I would like to remove the door frame to have a wider door, but I’m not sure how to avoid taking up too much space in the hall when it’s open. I also like the height the door currently offers so it would become a wedge shape.
I would then like to use the shortest section as pull out draws for shoes. I’m thinking of building a cabinet behind a wall and using old filing cabinet sliders. I’m not sure if this would work though.

I would love to see photos of how others have used this space and tips or what to avoid please.

Thank you so much for your comments. You would not believe how helpful they are and they have really worked to 'unblock' my chaotic thinking. The sofas have arrived this morning - I had a very stressful time watching as the delivery guys had to do a bit of dismantling to get them through the doors. All safely installed now. One of them is perhaps a bit too big for the space really but we are looking at rearranging to make it work. The room does look a bit darker - not helped by the gloomy light this morning - but hopefully that can get sorted with the new decor when it happens. We have had a look at some options for a coffee table with drawers for my partner's 'bruck' (an old Scottish/Orcadian word for junk I think) and I think this might work out well. BTW today he has added eye-drops, selloptape, a battery charger and a pen-knife to the collection of things that need to be at his elbow! As for the flooring ideas. The rest of the ground floor is covered with Amtico, which I really like but I wanted the sitting room to have a cosier, slightly more luxurious feel to it so I am not keen to go for stripped boards or other hard flooring. I will have a good look at the 'naturals', though they do seem a bit 'scratchy' perhaps. I have attached (I hope) a photo of one of the sofas to show the colour. They are rather darker than AJ Interiors suggested in the photo. Any other suggestions for colour schemes/decor would be most welcome. The point that comes through the postings so far is the need to incorporate some natural elements to soften the potential harshness of the scheme so I will focus on this once I have got the fundamentals fixed in my mind. I shall have more questions later on as I am also doing stairs and landing - hope it's OK to pot again. Thanks once more to Minnie et al.

You definitely don’t want to box this up! Any storage space is valuable and turning small space into study will add value. The other option is to make it into a cosy day bed/snug. You could add some wall lights which would really make it feel like a mini room off the main one.

Hi Nick, glad to hear it was helpful. :D that's just one option, and instead of the door, have a window which would still allow you the light and extra kitchen units. You can place a hob on the other side and then just have a fridge on the side and can utilise under stairs for the pantry, there are multiple options, in regards to placements of components, this was just a random one. It was more for you to be able to visualise the space. Real or engineered wood would be my first choice in a herringbone style but of course LVT is a much more budget friendly option. Underfloor heating is not easy to fit retrospectively and a lot of upheaval. If your radiators work I would keep them and work around them. I think your fireplace is a bit high to mount the tv over, the pic you show has a lovely round mirror and the tv at a much better height for viewing. Sit on a chair against the opposite wall and see what viewing angle is comfortable before you do that. Can you have a large sofa (3 seater) along the wall opposite the tv? You could than have a snuggler chair or just an additional armchair or two if space is an issue. A floorplan would provide a full background and we could advise you better on layout issues.
