Lounge layout. Help!

We're looking to redesign our living room. The main aim is to get more seating space, and to make the room feel less cramped. We also need a fair amount of storage, mostly for books, but also a few toys. We can't get rid of the tv unit as it houses as it houses many a games console, and I'm quite fond of the coffee table, so that's staying too. Other than that we're open to most ideas from anyone better at planning layouts than us!

Some notes:

- The window on the left has a radiator in front of it. It sticks out about 10cm.

- The door at the bottom leads to the hallway.

- The opening on the right is an archway that leads to the dining room.

- The tv has to go in the bottom left or right corner to plug in the aerial.

What can we do? Would a corner sofa work or make things worse? Please help!

How high is the window? Could you do something like this? Window seat incorporating the radiator though. How many do you need to seat regularly? I might be tempted to go for a long sofa on the back wall with a chair (maybe a swivel one) somewhere towards the bottom left with tv bottom right. You can always add a nice beanbag/pouffe for occasional seating

A corner/chaise could work but you tend to have that awkward corner bit where nobody wants to sit. Perhaps try one out in a shop?

Alternatively you could have a bookcase on the long wall (with toy storage in the corners for easy access ) with a sofa in front. Personally i’d have the bookcase the same colour as the walls so it doesn’t overwhelm the room

Hi, I have a walkway though my lounge to the conservatory it feels like a dirt track & driving me nuts My tv is too big to go in the bay window ( which i love) and we have tried moving the sofas to edges of the rug so one in front of conservatory and one on the rug side of the window but didn't look right and hated the space between the sofa and window and also didn't like the other sofa bang on the conservatory Any good ideas on how to arrange my room please The radiator is behind the sofa with the shelves on the wall

Hi- with young children, the big open space in the center of the room is ideal for now. That said, you might want to pull your furniture off the walls a bit, perhaps a console table behind the sofas decorated with a table lamp, etc. In terms of a focal point, I would think about What do you want to see when you enter the room? Is it the TV? Or is it people? The answer will have something to do with the adjacent room too and how you use it. If it’s the TV, it’s probably on the right wall now, but if you reversed it and the sofa’s current positions, the room might seem more sociable and open. Plus your TV cabinetry will have much less depth than a sofa, so easier on traffic flow. How much of the window wall do you want to see? Your room looks large enough that you could place consider placing some furniture in front of it. For example, an upholstered bench would square off the seating area and help create a separate little ”toy zone” behind it, but it wouldn’t block the lines of sight to the garden.

@mininie thank you. Love the storage elements of the floor to ceiling and wall to wall. It does make it more look more part of the room. We weren’t too sure about having the tv above the fireplace in the lounge again as we like to laying on our sofa to watch tv. Yes, we are planning on keeping the doubles doors for now. I’m still keen on changing the kitchen layout but it will have to wait due to the tight & lack of budget 🤣. We’ve decided to break our house plans into 2 categories; Essential, Medium & Long term work. Currently the lounge, under stairs storage, utility rooms (as there is currently no space for a tumble dryer) are some of the things we’ve put under Essential work.

I’m not a fan of corner sofas mainly because the bit where they join is uncomfortable and difficult to sit on, but that’s just me. You could have a 3 seater sofa on the back wall and a smaller sofa to the right, under the window. A bookcase could go by the wall near to the right of the door. You can get bookcases that have drawers or a cupboard at the bottom and shelves at the top, for hidden storage.
