Living Rooms Home Decorating Design Dilemma

are these rugs too small?. what about the design and colour?

I have borrowed this Beni O rug for my big living room. And another red carpet for my smaller living room.
Are they too small? How much bigger should they be?
Do people like the design or have other suggestions.
The big room is still work in progress in terms to dining table and art. And more chairs

The first one you could get away with. The second one is definitely too small just floating there. Rugs always look better with a bit of furniture on them.

It's really coming together. Go bigger, and place some of the rug under the sofa this will help to create a cosy feel.

Hello Francesca, Think the driftwood idea would work well but I rather think that you want something a little more rugged and definitely not painted. They should be exactly as they are natural and earthy.. Also veering toward the more unusual.. These rounded ones are fabulous as they would sit nicely with the surround which is stately and needs something that will offer a dramatic frame- they have width and show off their materials nicely.... For colours you could have some mossy greens or greenish greys... stone colours etc... with some elements of darker ivy greens to compliment... Think cushions and other details here.. There are actually some other lovely elements that take this onto other areas such as table lamps and or wall lights.. With really interesting twists on the theme... Something else that would work with the textures is this mangrove chandelier.. Shown here on dark charcoal backdrop but it would compliment the fire surround beautifully... : ))

I love the blue and think you could pull it off. I think you should aim to make most of the 'extras' white with a little black - eg curtains/blinds in white, pictures maybe try and stick with stuff with plenty of white space and have all the mounts white and the frames either white or thin black frames. I don't know what the splodgy thing on the wall in your design is but I think that's the one thing which doesn't go with the room. I really like the other colours you've chosen for the sofa / chair / cushions but maybe skip the patterned cushions. Clean lines and blocks of colour tend to work best with very strong colours - when you start mixing pattern and bright colours it can quite quickly become overwhelming. Ideally perhaps the kitchen could also be white with a black or grey worktop. You can paint the kitchen white but it's a fair bit of work. If you decide it's too much of the wall colour, I would consider making a wide horizontal band around the room rather than feature walls. It will look more unusual and I think better than feature walls would. I would paint from 1/4 of the way up the wall to 1/4 of the way down from the top, so half the wall.

You get used to the space very quickly and just as quickly fill it up with furniture. The feeling of space is great and as a new build I doubt heating will be an issue with insulation standards. I would suggest creating a feeling of space, lots of storage and light are crucial. 1.5 acre garden is very large, especially with a baby. I used to have just under half an acre and spent forever getting no where with weeding and cutting grass. I literally planted hundreds of trees as a wind belt and for decoration and you will need a ride on mower. Does give you space for a play area, patio, veg and fruit garden etc.

I see what you mean. You've followed the 'rukes' about furniture at least having front fet on the rug, but it doesn't quite work. It's a bit disconcerting that it so exactly fills the 'L' created by the sofa. Maybe it's that? Perhaps it's the colour against the darker floor that jars? Or even the texture? I always think those flat weave rugs look a bit insubstantial with big chunky furniture. Sory I havejt got a solution to suggest. I'm sure better designers than me will sort you out.
