Do I paint doorframes and bannister to match or colour wash?
Redecorating the hallway. Borrowed light in walls works well upstairs landing and carpet but was bored with all white decor downstairs so decided to repaint stairs (top coat of railings farrow and ball to go on next). Downstairs just looks wrong to me. And I’m wondering if I need to match door frames white? And possibly the natural wood bannister railings or white to match upstairs? Struggling to tie in floor walls frames etc? Any advice . Little natural light in hall way btw

9 months agoI think you could co-ordinate the upstairs and the downstairs, so paint the woodwork white, especially the door architraves. Then see what you think. For me I would be tempted to paint the doors too as the warm wood perhaps doesn’t sit that well with the blue and white. Here’s a couple of ideas that reflect how blue and white can look so good together.

Comments (2)Hello, Shot-blasting (AKA sandblasting) the beams will bring back the natural warmth of the wood, which matches perfectly with the red brick, the natural tones within the wood once treated post blasting will bring a level of depth to the room, and brighten it up making the space feel larger too. The natural 'sandy' undertones of the wood will blend well with a country theme, and even a more contemporary scheme. Choosing to white wash/ totally repaint to white will certainly allow more light to reflect throughout the space, giving a brighter, airier feel to the room. It really depends on the scheme (look) you would like to go with. A country, classical warm homely feel would be better with the natural wood. A more contemporary or a more chic, luxury scheme may benefit more from the white. Think about what furniture/ accessories you have for the room, and how they will work with either the natural or white. I hope this was helpful. Comments (138)These are my Japanese acers, I selected the shorter varieties since the drive isn't huge. The red one is approximately 10yo, the other two are 6-7 yo. They grow quite slow and stay compact,in my opinion. I tried to take the photos in front of our Cooper so you get the idea of the sizes. Comments (7)I completely agree, forget about herringbone on the stairs. Consider: a) Leaving or re carpeting your stairs as they are b) Remove the carpet and paint the treads and risers with a durable floor paint. Dulux does one. or my favoured option c) remove the current carpet and replacing it with a runner (carpet that does not go to the edge). Think about a flat weave or a sisal look covering. Try not to go for actual sisal as this is slippery and can be problematic. You will have to consider if you want the edges turned or turned and bound. Before fitting the carpet you will have painted the exposed edges, if needed to match banisters etc. When it comes to the landings, the most expensive and nicest option is to have the runner made to fit but this is more binding or other finishing. By the way I would not particularly recommend a highly contrasted binding, nor would I suggest a particularly wide one as I think it now looks both look a little dated. See attached lots of options that may get you thinking. and more expense. Hmm… undercoat on door actually looks ok . Was going to go white but now wondering about keeping darker door colour
