staggered kitchen islands

Hi
I’m thinking to use space well to join two kitchen islands in a staggered z-shaped way. Roughly like this photo. Anyone seen photos of islands like this? Would love to see some.
Also lighting - room is Victorian with bay without its walls, steels between this and lower ceiling more modern bits. Was going to Victorian cornice this to define as old part of house. Re lighting then, do I do central or double plaster ceiling rose with chandelier(s) and spots or if I go for multiple pendants over islands and spots I can’t have multiple plaster roses all over obviously. With islands off centre - not sure which way to go.

You need a professional kitchen designer to make this unusual space work. Your idea doesn’t work - it will feel like a tiny work space in an enormous space and worse still seeing the sink first when you enter what should be an impressive space is not great. The window seat doesn’t currently work because of the island position will hide it.

Separately I think you should make decisions about cornice and lighting after you have made kitchen decisions - for instance you will need tall cabinets for ovens etc- and being next to a tall bay window you may well conclude these cabinets need to be extra tall to look right in which case there may not be room for coving.

Oh, you sound so stressed! Other than the 3D rendering, I would recommend the old cardboard box trick to show how tight all the spaces are. Not only will you not be able to stand in front of your beautiful sleek drawers when you open them - you'll have to stand next to them - imagine coming in the door from the hall with a bag of shopping or your kids coming in with backpacks and then sliding through an 87 cm space. You need a lot more circulation space for a comfortable, working kitchen AND you won't be able to visually appreciate this island of your dreams where it is currently (as Jonathan said). Perhaps move the kitchen and island down in front of the internal bifold doors so you can see the island from a distance and gain more width and then have the seating at the end with the TV on the wall you already suggested, like this photo that J posted: Good luck!

Changing individual kitchen units and extend island

There is no budget way to do the changes you would like. Adding a larger sink to the island would in all probability involve changing the unit below and the work surface if it is an undermount sink. I cannot tell from your photograph. These costs in labour alone would be considerable not to mention a new island worktop. You may be able to swap in your fridge/freezer by removing some of the tall units. Try and find out who supplied the kitchen if you like the style and colour and see if you can get a quote from them. They will also tell you what is possible.

I have a large island. My arms are not long enough to clean the middle properly. You are going to have the same problem or whoever does your cleaning is. There is a reason why you don't see islands this large, There are also worktop size limits to consider. You could consider two islands if you want to fill the space and put them on legs so that it isn't such a visual block. You don't have to have tall units for ovens, there are some beautiful range cookers out there which also takes away the "where to put the hob" problem.

Could have an island facing the windows and view, with the bay end curved and in wood perhaps with bar stools in the bay.

Perhaps not quite what you meant by a "Z".

Anyway, you are going to lose cabinet space with a Z and posssibly feel trapped by it (hard to get around it) if I am understanding the drawing correctly. Your kitchen, your choice.

Thank you Jonathan. This was the product of a designer! I appreciate the ping of the sink as you walk in. The other plan was to have sink in main wall with ovens and fridge with l shaped island. The window seat is what it is and using the space is more important to us than the seat tbh. It’ll be pretty yes but I don’t feel the need to see it walking in. How else could it be done with still using the main wall and having to use the central space. I hadn’t thought of extra tall units to balance the window height. Thank you. I will explore this.

Isla good point about the cleaning. We are a family of over 6’ giants though! In fact we’ve even wondered about raising everything 5cm as we did in bathroom! For the same reason we’re keen on ovens up and drawers over cupboards!

Designers ideas of sink on main wall with island or L shaped island and then we progressed to the staggered. Sorry for strange software screen shots.

We progressed to staggered to get more worktop as we use a lot baking and prepping.

I agree with the previous comments, a Z-shaped island is unusual and a bit tricky to design as well as in terms of functionality. You could reduce the width of the island and do a double island look.
