I would like to replace my internal doors with rustic doors in oak. Would these look okay in a 1960s property?

In a property that is absent any features you can introduce any feature you want you just have to make a consistent choice with the next feature you add (which means don’t add cottage doors and then a grand fireplace).

Personally I think oak doors tend to mellow in colour and if you want to introduce wood you may be better doing it in flooring. If you just want to make it feel more homely then wallpapers and soft furnishings may be a better way to go.

I would do a lot of research of 60's houses with the original features. I think anychoice is good if all the features are taken into consideration. It's not just about the doors is it?

Ha! an idea...one of our houses, the bungalow, is up for sale with Verity Frearson estate agents in harrogate & may give you an idea of what I have done to it. Its been up for sale for 3 weeks & we have 3 buyers in waiting (with houses to sell.) Its on their website & is 18 leadhall drive. When we bought it, it had upvc doors, & caravan windows at the front for privacy. At the back it had a utility room & a warren of little rooms with small windows commanding the best views of the south facing garden. The green in the bedroom photo isn't qyite as vile as it may look in the photo. If i did it again I would probably use steel/ aluminium windows at the back. I also love just one large picture window too. the doors internally, where they are not glass double doors, are the dordogne doors from Howdens which are very reasonable & add seem to suit many styles of houses rather than the usual panelled door. Mine are painted but they can be left wooden. we have another house, a victorian town house, but this is our favourite as it is like being on holiday each morning even in winter.

Hi John, We would always suggest external insulation rather than internal insulation, where you have the option, because as John Botham states there is a real risk of interstitial condensation, and potential mould and damage to the structure. If you do need to do it internally be careful not to add to much and ensure it is fitted carefully without gaps and with a good vapour barrier - especially around electric sockets etc. if you use a product such as Kingspan. It is also vital that you return the insulation in around the windows, this makes significant differences to overall performance and the risk of condensation and mould at this point, though this insulation can be thinner. We often recommend a breathable insulation such as Pavadentro when internal insulation is required, as this allows the moisture to come in and out of the wall. Careful detailing at internal wall junctions, floors and roof are also needed, along with good airtightness sealing, while you are doing it. Putting a price on external insulation is difficult as it depends on many factors, such as needing to move down pipes, extending eaves etc, along with thickness and type of insulation. A good render, installed correctly should last many years without the need for any maintenance and can perform to a much higher standard than internal. Without swapping your front door as per OnePlan's idea which might be abit costly and wreck the internal layout for furniture placement etc I'd say adding a gate, something metal to match the balustrades would work well. Depending which way the house faces and how much light you want in the front bedroom I'd recommend putting some planters alongside the wall with bamboo in to give you privacy. Planters on the other side adjacent to the balustrade can have some flowering plants and small evergreen shrubs eg Hebe, Ilex crenata or Heucheras. Failing that if you have more cash you could add a small porch on the front where you seem to have grass and then you help to seal air going into the bungalow and shift the entrance away from the patio and front bedroom. The front gable built by others seems to really suit this house and clearly a precedent has been set so planning shouldn’t be a problem. But currently the upstairs isn’t big enough for what you are planning so you have to add to the downstairs as well…. I suspect the property will increase in size substantially which throws up problems of: is there enough budget? Will the garage be in the way of a rear extension? Given the new square footage will any of the old rooms (such as the living room) be undersized? You might look at the public access part of the planning portal on your local Borough Councils website. You should be able to look up neighbours planning applications and gain inspiration from their plans. You might also consider if moving the stairs or building a garage on the side driveway helps achieve a better layout and garden.

Thanks Sarah. Yes ours were the flush featureless doors originally & we replaced the two lounge doors with glass 3 x 5 glass panelled doors in 1998. Now wanting a change from forever cleaning glass panels. I do like your choice of the 4 panelled shaker-style doors - they would give a bit of character in keeping with the rest of the room without looking too cottage-like. Thank you for your help and thanks to everyone else for your thoughts and ideas - much appreciated.
