Help! I am lost in sad design

Oversized bedroom lacks style, color, purpose! I am looking for ideas to give it some life through paint, wallpaper, focal point. There is a large sliding door behind the charcoal curtains. The strange palladian window does not open and is currently covered with a throw hanging on a cafe rod. The opposite wall is full of closet doors that are blah. I would appreciate any input on lowcost design ideas. Not planning on staying here more than a year more. Thanks in advance to my Houzz geniuses!

So this is an apartment that you cannot paint? Pooling curtains are a trend that designers should be ashamed to have foisted on the masses. They all recommended them and now they call them sloppy.

You have yellow already so some complimentary color blue would help. Replicate the circle with some baskets and get a harem/moroccan vibe going on.

I’m not a fan those dark drapes.

Can you post a floor plan the space with the demensions.

Off hand, I would cover that window. You can seal from the inside and it will still look the same outside.

I would get comfortable seating, large club chairs, an ottoman.

So funny! I'm planning to paint the bannister at the new house (TNH) black and am veering towards painting the treads and risers black too... I've been searching for images of black staircases on Houzz and putting them in my entrance hall ideabook. They are few and far between. In your case, I think, with your white walls, maybe the stairs white and the bannister black? (Assuming the white walls continue up the stair walls enabling the b/w contrast.) You've already put black firmly into the equation, adding some more may give more reason for the black rad cab. In my case, there is a very off-centre radiator that could so very easily have been directly opposite the front door in TNH which is rather annoying as it stuffs up the focal point. We are leaving here with every radiator covered with a cabinet - and going to TNH that has loads of radiators ...but no cabinets! Yes, the work ahead is daunting - especially since the area of Ireland we're going to is very basic and not full of DIY resources, etc. I keep thinking I'll paint TNH white - to make things simpler(!) But try as I may colour keeps wandering through my mind! Lovely to be in touch again!

Hello Amanda, : )) Do you mean in the kitchen? Yes a nice idea. I like flat plate too, but really plain. Well the best way to describe how I feel about certain alterations is to tell you about someone I knew who "did up" her flat to such a degree that she literally took away all that was characterful about it.. Sometimes it's best to leave things as their patina develops over time and results in something quite special. Restoration is one thing but you can also restore the life out of something and thus diminish in certain contexts the value- and so it's good to know when to stop.. So yes, I'm firmly in the camp suggesting leave them, but of course it's entirely your choice. : ))

Spent a year designing my garden - am i on the right track?

@ angm47 - Nice garden! It's the opposite to yours. Mine slopes upwards towards the far end, so I've added steps on the drawing, see the two horizontal double lines. So there would be 4 changes in level in total inc the last one behind the gabion retaining wall. I'm expecting a fair amount of ground excavation regardless of final design. PS I'm really into grids and straight lines so not opting for anything circular. @campo73 - nice isn't it! Yeah it's the same, 9x5 grid of 600m@ slabs, making the shorter side 3m wide, plus I've added another slab width path to two sides, making it even wider for chairs to be pulled out. I noticed the smaller table too. Thanks for the tip on the stone choice. @rachelmidlands - thanks for your additional feedback! @JBS Ltd - I agree that a light coloured slab would look more contemporary, which is what I'm after, but I'm reluctant to if they will go green all the time :-S You read my mind on the planting, I already have some miscanthus I'm potting up ready for action. As for the perennials, I'm going to go for strong stemmed ones with winter seed interest, rudbeckia goldsturm for example. I quite like the idea of a late season garden, like Joanne Bernstein's (bloody gorgeous garden and a BIG inspiration that one - see pic link http://farm1.static.flickr.com/343/19951288828_3accea0675_b.jpg. @Jen P - Yeah I thought it'd fit too - the size is 3.0x5.4m - it's hardly small! Whilst I like angm47's garden I am opting for straight lines, grids, no curves. Plus, crucially, (if anyone's noticed) I've brought ALL the planting areas away from the yew hedge boundary consciously, from a practical point of view. I'm trying to design it with manageability in mind as well as aesthetics. Plus I quite like the idea of bringing the focus inwards rather than putting it on the borders around the edges. Plus, I'm not so bothered if the garden is long and rectangular, because its easy to change when the kids grow up :) @colourhappy - totally agree - if you see everything at once you give the game away. So I've put in screening features with line of sight from the living room in mind. Re 45 degree angles, oh god that means a complete re-design :-) I've been told to 'work with what you've got' in the past, so taking that on board, my design grew from the existing raised brick border on the right that's parallel with the boundary. I'm not sure I could/want to change it all and and keep that there at the same time. @fran11home - thanks for the tip I'll check it out!

Put colour on the bed covering so it doesnt dissapear into wall. Hem up those sloppy looking draperies..

If you're only going to be there for a year, re-use the drapes but hem them up. Use iron-on hemming tape for a quick fix. They should go all the way to the end of the rod, i.e. over the bracket to the finial. The bracket comes through a gap in the back.

Do you ever sit in that grey chair? It looks a bit like a "naughty chair" stuffed in the corner. I'd put it closer to the dressing area.

For new purchases, I suggest a duvet cover, headboard and wall art. Focus on the sleeping area and ignore the closet doors.

I need a to scale floor plan since how you take pics often distorts the room. First you need to pick a style nothing works together right now. The dresser very traditional, the bed with no headboard not good. the drapes just look sloppy . The night tables the wrong style and color. So post the plan here in a comment DO NOT start another post . Pretty sure you can do better for wall art than some rattan circles that for sure do not work with the dresser .

Put the chair and a small side table and small lamp in front of the stationary part of the slider. Agree with rest of suggestions regarding drapes. Hand a full lenth drape in front the the window and keep closed,matching the drapes over slider. Look for more dynamic wall art once you have slected more traditional and luxurious bed linens to work with traditional furnishings. Maybe a folding screen along side of desk to disquise the ‘office vibe’.

The bed is probably on the WRONG wall

Draw the space. Show the entrance to the bedroom the closet wall, the bank of windows you are covering with awful curtains.

Add the feet and inches to every single thing. walls windows, entrance to bath etc, and if you are not in this country? Use USA feet and inches.

Post that as a very legible jpeg below in the comments.

Musical furniture. Put chest with tv where desk is. Put desk under little window. Bed and night stands go on large wall with foot toward window. Hem drapes like stated above. Find headboard to match chest. Art for walls.

Create zones/try moving furniture around and only add items on wall once you have figured out the final configuration.

Suggest moving high boy to where desk is so bed can be placed on the long wall (headboard would be nice and search Marketplace for a good fine).

(Just saw your additional picture and noticed the doorway so may not work).

At the far end create a seating/working area. Chair on wall on right/tv across next to window and desk on the back wall.

Before adding/changing accessories (adjust drapes), consider a look/color scheme. Anything you purchase can be brought with you, so not wasted money.

I understand you're on a low budget and moving in a year's time.

Please post a floor plan. There's probably a better way to place the furniture, it's looks like a large room but without a plan with dimensions showing doors and windows it's impossible to suggest anything. The bed seems at the far end with a chair stuck in the corner, and you have a desk that also looks squished in a corner by the sliding door and the closet doors.

Since you are moving in a year, please don’t spend money on paint or wallpaper. Spend some time deciding on your style and only purchase things that you love and want to take with you. I am also on the side of everyone who is advising you to move the bed opposite the slider and move the high boy to the end wall. Beautiful bedding can make a bedroom cozy and personal. I don’t like “artwork” which is code for “ go to Target and buy pictures”. Do you have personal photos of a special beautiful beach or mountain waterfall you have visited? Have those blown up and buy picture frames. Haunt consignment shops and find night stands or small tables or even small chests of drawers for beside your bed. Consignment shops are also a good source of lamps.

Would you be open to moving the bed? It might be nice to place it facing the sliding doors, where the TV currently is. Then you could easily use the space where the bed is for a chaise or reading area or even desk area. Below are some of our bedroom designs we think might just help you more with your current dilemma.
