BATHTUB OPTIONS FOR BASEMENT BATHROOMS :(

We are renovating our basement bathroom (victorian terraced house) and we have a problem….BATHTUB.

So the old bathtub is a freestanding victorian styled bathtub with LEGS. But we wanted to go for a modern vibe therefore was going to buy a modern freestanding bathtub with no legs.

However our plumber told us that we can’t have a freestanding bathtub because it has to be raised for the plumbing.. as the bathroom is basement..

So we have two options according to the plumber.

Find bathtub with legs - It’s so hard to find bathtub with legs that looks modern. any recs?
Raise the floor where the bathtub sits - I don’t know how common this is? Because if the whole floor is raise then the bathtub sit quite higher up. I already have to lift my leg high to get into the bathtub so…if it’s even more raised then idk if it’s weird?

I guess you could build a platform for the bath that has enough room to step onto and then get into the bath so you are not climbing from floor level into a raised bath. It looks like you have about a foot I front of the bath before the wall on the left would that be accurate? As it seems to be tucked into a corner with walls on both sides I think this would look ok and not like those awful bathrooms from the 1980’s. You could have wall mounted taps to save more space around the bath. Are you prepared to rip out the tiles or are they staying?

Your existing bathroom is lovely and in keeping with the house. Save your money!

You can use side panels or a deck/surround to create what is, in effect, a free standing bath that would work well aesthetically and, optionally, as part of a wetroom-style bathroom. Deep soaking tubs are especially effective for such projects; they have smaller footprint, which affords more room in the shower area, but their greater depth makes them exceptionally comfortable.

Everything Jonathan says is correct. You have to factor in the prep for the room. Removing tiles re-doing the water pipes, chasing them in to the walls etc. Then the re-tiling. The labour is the biggest budget usually. We went for rectified porcelain...........not for the faint hearted. Nasa would have a problem drilling through those. So, yes, as above choose the tiles carefully. Our bathroom is roughly the size of yours without the corner missing. So, take 25% off the tile cost of the tiles:- The tiles were £1500 ( wall and floor ) - The wall tiles are 900mm x 450 the floor tiles are 1200 x 300 Bath - half price £695 Shower - half price £299 Toilet - full price £450 Vanity Full price £699 Bath taps £300 Basin taps £150 Shower valve £150 Shower head and arm £150 Shower spray hose and head £150 Aquapanel £95 Tile adhesive £95 Coloured Grout £45 Total cost of purchases £3,278 We ( the wife - my labourer and I ), took down two walls, moved a doorway, put one wall back up. We re-routed all the pipework, central heating, hot and cold feet, chased pipes in to the walls etc. The whole thing took 3 weeks and I had a tiler friend help me for 3 days. Plus on top of that I had a plasterer in for the weekend for £400. Thus we only paid £1200 for the labour. If I had charged for my labour - plus mate for say 2 weeks, ( not three - as I wasn't working flat out ) instead of doing it for free it would have cost a further £2,500. Total labour should have been :- £3,700 plus the purchases £ 3,278 = £6,978 The bathroom is a luxury bathroom, so yes it's at the higher end of the market, but you can see how things mount up. Even when you try and save on the items going in, it's still the labour that gets you. A bathroom is a horrible, job, i'd rather do a kitchen any day and that's bad enough.

Inds, one thing that you need to think about is how you deal with the "external" corners. Forgetting this is a common mistake and means that the edge of the tile on one side or the other is exposed and this often leads to an ugly detail. With natural marble the option is often to mitre these edges and then lightly grind off the sharp edge to protect the stone. This is not n option with ceramic or porcelain tiles. I would try and find a tile that offers porcelain or ceramic trims which give a nice neat edge detail such as https://www.architecturalceramics.com/bianco-carrara-5225 If these trims are outside of your budget then there are a variety of stainless steel, aluminium or plastic options available, but ask the question of your tile supplier. You can get some lovely modern freestanding baths on wooden or stone legs or plinths that might do the trick? Here’s some ideas…

If you really want a legless bath then having it on a raised platform is really the only option. It could look stunning. Think about low lighting and if you find it a stretch to get in and out then avoid any bath with high sides like a slipper style. You will be entering the bath from the raised platform not the original floor. The raised platform will look much neater if you make it wall to wall under the bath as a plinth. Get the plumber to draw you some quick sketches so that you understand the plumbing too. Consider your tap too. A floorstanding bathfiller tap might be easier than a deck mounted version. You might also consider building a false wall behind and mounting a bath filler on that, spout and levers. Don't forget a separate hand shower.
