Discovered original flooring and wondering if its worth refurbing or if its soft wood? Thanks :)

What age is your house? It looks like pine to me. Often when boards rotted they replaced them with chipboard. Was there a carpet over it? I love the look of floorboards but difficult to match now as sizes have changed. You could pick the closest match wood wise and replace all the floorboards.

My floorboards are pine. They’re not hardwearing and although they looked great after sanding and varnishing it didn’t last and they got very scratched and dented.

Hi Ocean Home Designs, There are many pro's and cons when installing a floor prior or after the kitchen. An advantage with fitting prior would be it makes life easier to fit a kitchen on top off, as the levels would be a lot easier to work from. Another benefit would be, the flooring will be easier/quicker to install with no kitchen obstructions to go around. On the other hand, some would rather not waste material by going under the units as the floor would just be covered over and never seen again, hence making a saving in material & fitting costs.

Thanks all for your help, we haven't got underfloor heating and I have two very messy boys especially with water so I think engineered wood is out and so are real tiles as they would be so cold. Its a north facing room so I'm very aware I need to warm the look of the room up as the grey and the white walls are looking very stark now. Karndean, amtico and poyflor are the companies i'll look at then. Has anyone used polyflor? They seem much cheaper than the other two companies? And oneplan would grey flooring look weird against the grey wood Worktop? Bit too matchy? I'd like to go a bit more modern Scandi kitchen. Unfortunately my husband likes country style hence the kitchen handles and look we chose. But now I want to warm it up a bit and give it a more Scandi look?! Thanks for your help

I agree with your friend that travertine will be a nightmare to keep clean - too many nooks and crannies for dirt to nestle into! I love porcelain tiles, they are tough and so easy to clean, quick hoover and a mop. I have them in a dark grey slate look a like In my kitchen. They come in so many forms from wood effect through to all the stone effect finishes. Worth going to a good tile store and have a good look around. Bring the door with you so you can colour match. i think any of the F&B beige neutrals will look good on the walls. I particularly Purbeck Stone and Skimming Stone. I’m not sure if grey is right with the cashmere doors, you need something warmer perhaps?

My dad just laid cheap paving slabs in his and he mostly grew tomatoes which he grew in a line on either side with the path along the middle. Very basic! If it’s posher for sitting in then they look lovely with terracotta type tiles. Just need a bit more info or even a photo.

I also think they are pine. They would refurbish but wouldn’t be hard wearing. You might also appreciate carpet for keeping out drafts

Thank you so much everyone - house was bult c.1880 so i think we will re-carpet as doesnt sound liket they would wear well!
