Wallpaper mural to make a tiny WC look bigger

Hello,

We are renovating our 1930’s semidetached house and have added a small wc (1m wide x 1.5 m long) on the ground floor.

I need advise on what wallpaper to use to make the room look bigger.

We want the wc to be striking as it will be visible when entering through the hallway.

A cabinet also has to be built to hide the boiler located above the toilet.

The tiles on the ground floor as a white-grey matt tile.

I loved the look of a dark foliage and selected a few ideas (see pictures)
Wallpaper: Graham Brown - congo nightfall
Cabinet: oracdecor in green
Basin: Mini Bryony or Cielo Minimultiplo

My partner likes the idea of a big koi-carp type of mural.

However, Im a bit worried that this design may make the wc feel even smaller. After reading up, some suggest to instead add a mural with an aspect to create depth….

Not sure where to go from here…

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure that wallpaper will make the space feel bigger? I love the koi but it will shrink the area. Have a look at a smaller scaled wallpaper like some of the japanese style ones from Farrow and Ball. John Derian's chimney swallows are lovely and suble and a better scale.

Consider using a hang on the wall basin with a built in towel rail underneath which will mask the pipework and save wall space. I would add a full size mirror on the wall opposite the window and add a cupboard above the toilet for storage. Removing the upper tiles will stop the space feeling so tall and therefore so thin and also less cold and sanitary - I like the bold blue - try it - you can always re-paint if you change your mind....if you can't afford a full wall of mirror consider mirror tiles (Ikea do 30cm ones in packs of 4) and these would adhere directly to the tiles saving that wall being chipped away at..sorry - just seen how old this thread is....wonder what you decided on eventually?

Thanks forzaitalia. The loo comes off the hall, which has real wood flooring, so not keen on using fake wood flooring - think it might look odd. I guess plain tiles is the way to go. Just had it in my head that we'd have very fancy tiles - i really like the mosaic ones, but I guess it'll clash with the wallpaper.

Thanks Betty Boo, Ive already done that but Google mostly shows room murals much larger than what my wc is… still leaving me a bit unsure.

Ah yes, Sarah’s second photo shows exactly what I was thinking. Any image can be sized to suit your wc and its dimensions.

Don’t go for a small pattern- your instinct is right that an oversized pattern will look great

You won’t make a small room look bigger no matter how you try, so I would embrace its cosiness and go for a wallpaper you love. Florals and botanical prints would look amazing. Murals need a big wall to be effective, I feel. However that boardwalk mural looks incredible. So let your imagination go wild!

Thank you all! Love the boardwalk but have to cover the boiler over the toilet. Agreed Jenny about finding the paper I love and then going from there 😊 Appreciate your thoughts.

JoK i love how you have curated so far and i agree you need to fall in love with the design. i love timorous beasties indi wood in jade and the london basin company for a dream downstairs wc but im just dreaming…..
