Building our first home- open plan kitchen and living room?
Comments (7)I love open plan living, and it definitely is the way most families want to live at the moment. If you're not sure about totally open plan living then there are ways that you can zone the space to create more separate areas eg open shelving used as a room divider, sliding / concertina doors which slide in to the wall or fold flat against the walls. If budget is no object then you can get glass panels which are clear and change to opaque at the flick of a switch (they are very expensive though!). If budget is tighter then use wall coverings (paint, wallpaper etc) and different flooring options to delineate the individual spaces. Have a look at an open plan kitchen I did a couple of years ago for some ideas: - there are lots of before and after pictures in this folder. To be fair, it wasn't the family's main living room but you get the general idea. For other ideas, I did a quick search on Houzz and came up with lots of examples: http://www.houzz.co.uk/open-plan-kitchen-living/ls=5...See MoreWhat should I choose Handless or with handle in an open plan kitchen?
Comments (5)Hi There is true handleless and then there is a door with a 'J' groove at the top. The J groove door is pretty awful as the paint finish in the groove is always quite rough and opening an integrated fridge or dishwasher is more than awkward. A true handleless system with a channel fixed to the carcass is way better, much easier to use and you can pretty much choose any door material you like. Typically you only get the J groove door system from English kitchen manufacturers and the fixed channel system from German made kitchens. Comments (3)It's an awkward one as a lot of the kitchen is in the dining area, and the space that you don't want to have a table & chairs is opposite the sink. You could put one of the armchairs there. Keep the sofa where one is at the moment. You could go for a darker cognac leather or dark grey. Grey tones go with the brick. A nice bright rug would look good, but I'd keep the walls light and airy as they are now. In order to place something like this arrangement, you will have an armchair near to the sink. Although the kitchen is lovely...........If you ever have the budget, i'd consider moving the kitchen around. Change the island possibly for a smaller one and turn the side run of units along the left hand wall to across the room for 'U' Shape, giving you a much better sofa / lounge area....See MoreModern open plan kitchen in Edwardian Semi
Comments (19)Hi gogo, here is the new kitchen layout floor plan (excuse annotations); a second one with the lighting and power annotations that seems to have distorted a bit - and a third showing the original layout of the whole ground floor. you can see the vast chimney breast that came out. plus our cellar access (and a drain) were in the old utility room, where we needed units and the island to go. The cheaper solution to all our work would have been to knock through the kitchen and dining room and combine... but I wanted to retain 2 separate lounges. Our kitchen is space isn't vast - but it's actually perfectly proportioned now with our other rooms and apart from those giveaway pillars, almost looks like it was always like that. We lowered our ceilings so no beams showing - took a while to get use to the 2400 height but again, definitely the right decision. I've loaded more pics in my ideabook - (called 'last attempt' in reference to the loading onto houzz debacle, not the kitchen itself....). Good luck with your project....See More- 10 years ago
