Why did you change the material of the stairs, marble and Wood?

Many reasons, upstairs the floor is wood, it made more sense to have the stairs in wood, wood is a less heavy material and the structure was an existing one, we did not have enough space to have marble and keep the correct height for the steps.

What a beautiful staircase! It is stunning! Project Home UK suggested a stair runner going down the middle of the steps would perhaps be more effective than a fully fitted carpet. We supply carpets and floorcoverings throughout the UK and Ireland and can also offer a bespoke stair runner service where you choose any one of our floorings or carpets (as long as suitable for stairs of course) and pick a border to go around the edge. We recently did a photoshoot in a location with a similar staircase to yours, photo below, where we used a bold striped runner in 100% wool, with a simple whipped edge. hi all, update is I have finally found a photo of someones stairs done in Brintons timorous beastie yellow Ruskin butterfly and its made me decide we are definitely 100% going for this as I love it (see attached pics) on stairs and landing... Floor in hall will be oak herringbone parquet, just wall colour to decide and we have bought new tall skirting so colour to paint this also? i have attcahed apic of the hall currently so you can see our front door with stain glass.. As Ive mentioned before the banister and spindles will be replaces with square spindles with an oak top banister and oak end cap - similar to this houzz pic ... So just to deicide on wall colour and new skirting colour... I really like f&b light blue in a hall with oak parquet but I don't feel this will go with the carpet... Kitchen and dining room will be one of the sage shades and lounge Wimborne white and downpipe...

I would paint white throughout; ceilings, walls, every room. White is very popular at the moment and also much quicker and cheaper to keep going room to room, no clean up in between, no changing brushes and paint trays, no cutting in around ceiling edges and no half pots of paint left over from each room. White goes with everything and looks clean and fresh. Replace the bathroom if needs replacing. Replace floor coverings with vynal in kitchen and bathroom. Lay hardwearing, but not too expensive, carpet in all rooms and using the same carpet throughout worka out cheaper and helps the place flow. A four bed property needs an extra shower or bathroom. General rule is one bathroom for 3 bedrooms, more than 3 you need a second bathroom or shower room. An en suite would suffice if you can fit one in to the main bedroom or add a shower and toilet on the upper floor as OP has suggested.

Dark wood throughout house, keep or change?

Black or dark grey will look great too,. There are lots primer products that help block the dark stains and varnishes and lots of youtube tutorials on how to paint over dark wood in case you decide to go white. I would agree with Sonia in that you should divide the project up. Maybe forget about the rest of the house and just focus on the fireplace as your only project. Seeing a complete project is always good motivation to complete another. Regarding the burgundy tiles. Although I don't normally recommend painting tiles, if they are in a low "traffic" and low moisture area then painting them is an option. It doesn't look like your fire place is used to light fires? If not, another option is adhesive vinyl tiles, bear with me! We put down wood effect vinyl tiles in the front entrance a while back as a temporary measure. The previous owners had cream coloured carpet! I couldn't stand it, so I used vinyl tiles as a quick cheap solution, but I've been really impressed with how they look and how durable they've been. Now I don't have any plans to change them. They come in so many options from wood to marble to Victorian tile. And best of all its a very DIY'able project, its cheap so if you don't like it just peel them off. They are rigid enough that the grout lines from your tiles wont show through. I've attaced some examples of the many many options available.
