Help to disguise hideous "Sharps" brand built in
I have a Victorian house and am decorating it in a bohemian style (think Bloomsbury group rather than starving artist). This is my sewing/whatever area but mostly I flipping hate the cupboards. The built in is functional but ugly.
The chair air is being upholstered to be navy blue, the brass pot will have a big snake tongue plant, art to be put on the walls are water colours of bees with a brass or gold/black frame. But really it doesn't have to match.
The two tone blue wall you can see is from my living/formal dinning area and there are glass doors that can close but are never closed unless I'm making heaps of noise. I'm actually thinking of putting a curtain there to give more luxury and coziness.
The handles can be removed/ I was thinking of maybe wall papering the cupboards? But I'm so indecisive about it.

Comments (302)Hello folks! I haven't disappeared, just had whooping cough (yes, seriously!) with a garnish of gastric flu and torn muscles from coughing fits. So that has severely impeded our efforts (hubby's had it too, and it lasts around 3mths so we're not out of the woods yet!) with our new house (which I now describe as semi-derelict before we bought it) and so had no time/mental energy to properly get updated on what's been happening with you guys. Where to start?! I think I've taken in all that's happened in this thread since I went AWOL but might have missed some finer points. Monica, I'm so sorry to hear what u'v been through, with the RTA & the cowboy tiling / wallpapering on top! (& work always picks worst times to intensify - I just started on a Task Force this week, when shd really still be on sick leave). I mean, a marker?! Seriously?! Isn't it common knowledge / common sense to use a lightly applied pencil? Sounds like u r doing best thing by looking at it as a learning experience. Still, he deserves an honest review somewhere. Anyway, onwards and upwards, I'll look at the lounge link when I've finished this post. BTW I LOVE your artwork. Vivacious, bright and deep - is there an insight there? ;-) And RoRo, wow you've got a lot on your plate! We've been so frustrated with being held back on our projects by health, but u have taken on a bigger scale of project altogether, sounds like it's verging on municipal! U guys inspire me. :-) Thinking of starting a thread on our living room, it's the most 'civilised' room of the house so far, but I didn't take the north-facing position into account when I decided on a colour scheme of turquoise, grey and lime. (Doh!) So far I've made some headway on a concept I'm excited by, but it needs some tweaking so it doesn't feel 'cold' with the blue tone of the natural light. Comments (61)I live in the Scottish Borders and three years ago there was a government incentive to externally insulate the houses. Due to the construction of the houses (poured concrete they couldn’t have cavity wall insulation ) . The difference to the heating bills is unbelievable but the look of the house is fabulous as there was new render put on new window sills and down pipes .i agree with the comment that just doing one house would stand out like a sore thumb but it just takes one to start the ball rolling . Maybe speak to your neighbours and they may want to do the same . All the houses in my street had the cladding and it has transformed the look of the street . I have since revamped my lounge and kitchen. There was nothing wrong with the kitchen cupboards so they where painted ,new work tops and sink . I did have a breakfast bar that took up a lot of room which I have replaced with a glass table . My next project is my bedroom which is getting refitted with new wardrobes and draws . Ex local authority houses are well built and have big rooms , they are worth buying as you can do so much with them ,I have bigger cupboards than the rooms that are in some new builds . Comments (29)Hi Ben, I like the 2nd last design, the one without the cupboard opposite the boiler. Having a wall unit there breaks the sight line and makes it feel cluttered. I would use the shelves for glasses and cups. I have wood worktops from worktop express. Great quality, just a little wear 3 years on. We opted for an oil finish and need to do the 1st re-oil soon. We have a dishwasher so minimal dishes done but the sink is siliconed under it's rim. Water doesn't seem to be an issue yet....See Morekaren6696

7 years agoThanks! I feel these are fairly modern influences, I'm having difficulty (well not difficulty but it's the challenge of this house) that this house is huge and so I need to introduce coziness. I also dislike white walls.
The rug is an excellent suggestion, I even had one rolled up which might suit this spot.
The red stays as I like the bold colour and the them runs a little through the blue rook.

7 years agoI would definitely wallpaper the cupboards judging by the styles and images that are influencing you. Maybe try a really dark colour over the tall shelving areas you can see, such as Annie Sloane's graphite (which I can vouch for as a good solution providing you let it cure properly, a min 24hours after waxing) before popping your stuff back in. Use the same paint on the outer edges of the cupboard fronts and frames, then take a bold, damask style wallpaper to finish the fronts, with some lovely antique handles. You could maybe use a little gilding wax just to lift the graphite a bit - a nice antique gold. You'd need to darken the work surface too.
This sounds quite drastic, but I've done something similar myself (albeit it on a much smaller item). The colours are totally different here but hopefully it'll help you
see what I mean.
