Which kitchen worktop (colour and type)?
Comments (14)Have you had a look at quartz (silestone, compac, cimstone etc)? They offer a lot of white coloured stone and it has the features of granite worktops with the look, feel and touch but they come without the added maintenance of granite worktops. Wood worktops compliment light coloured kitchens but they do come with extra maintenance that if not kept up to scratch will make the wood look nasty after a while. Corian is a solid surface material that comes with various white/grey/light colourways and a key thing that makes it popular is that the joins are invisible, so it looks like one giant piece. Personal preference and a lot of pictures will get you an idea of what it is you want. There are quite a lot of options out there so make sure you take some time to research each worktop material and brand....See MoreWhich kitchen brand and appliances would you recommend?
Comments (21)Just to weigh in on the Howdens comments, the key is to make sure you know someone in the trade who can put you forward to them, that way you just get dealt with as a trade using their account. They do have sales on but generally speaking the price doesn't fluctuate much through the year, except when they have their big sale on which is usually October time. I do use Howdens and no, they're not perfect but most of the grumbles I hear are more to with customer service which don't fall in line with the glossy showroom kitchen providers. The quality of the kitchens is very good (25 year warranty iirc) so if you have access to them then do get a quote from them. I think what I would say is that if you go to Howdens, expect a slightly tradesman type relationship (the showrooms are far from impressive) but a key thing is that they hold stock on most items. If you get a damaged door for example, it can be replaced next day, try getting that out of Homebase....... With regard to appliances, we have SMEG in our kitchen and I'd never buy it again. Hobbs been fine, but three new ovens on warranty and whilst it now works fine, the previous two didn't. Previously we had Bosch for everything and it all worked faultlessly, so I can't recommend them enough....See MoreHelp on various kitchen decisions before ordering next week!
Comments (19)Thanks everyone for your helpful comments - GJ Dee thanks for your compliments we love the handles too! I think we will stick with one large sink, our old kitchen had a 35cm wide sink and no small sink, it was fine but when we needed to wash up our large saucepan which couldn’t go in the dishwasher it was a nightmare because it didn’t fit! Black sink would be nice but would be concerned about limescale as we do get quite a bit! Possibly we might be able to make the sink unit 800mm then can have a big sink then a little sink - will have to check if it fits as we still need a decent amount of circulation room around the island. MATH - I love that splashback! Do you mean have the brass directly behind the hob and then the rest of the wall tiles? I suppose if we use a lighter grout if the tiles are not directly behind the hob it is less likely to get mucky. We were originally going for just brass for the handles as don’t want to overdo the whole brass thing but will have a think about it! Watermark - omg your taps are beautiful! I think we are set on a cheap basic tap for the kitchen but looking for some nice brass taps for the bathroom so will send an enquiry through!...See MoreHow did you choose a kitchen provider?
Comments (7)Hi Hu, I think the biggest thing to consider when getting a new kitchen is getting the layout right. A lot of the large retail companies/smaller franchises work on selling and operating at certain margins. They also work with limited set sizes, so although you can walk in, likely get an appointment on that day and walk out with a price and a couple of pictures - you will be put through a variety of corporate sales techniques and are more than likely going to walk out with a kitchen that doesn't work in the long run, as well as a heavily inflated price tag which no doubt will alter as and when you shop around with the other outlets. I am somewhat biased in saying this but equally our business wouldn't exist without the demand - your best option is to seek independent design and layout advice. We work with our clients, your needs and come up with layouts that work for you/your family. Not a one size fits all put into different spaces. We are able to offer you a more comprehensive layout and design experience where you get high quality renders, access to all elevations and most importantly labelled floor plans WITH measurements - something that the big companies don't give out until you've put down a hefty deposit and are a few weeks away from install. We are also on hand all the time...before, during and after should you fancy a chat, need a question answered or you would like to ask us some advice relating to anything from accessories, lighting, splashbacks etc. When you focus on the design and get that bit right you find the rest falls into place, we can suggest suppliers for you to use; anything from off the shelf kitchens from the big companies, to online based companies that we work closely with and even bespoke cabinet makers. We offer quote sourcing for you too if it makes the process much less stressful, taking the hassle of having to worry about quantities and plan checking. But most importantly, before you even begin to start the design process we offer a complimentary hour long zoom/phone call so you can be sure that we are the right people for you and we can discuss ideas before you commit to anything - and speaking of commitment we offer anything from design by the hour or set packages - so we are fully flexible and it's more about you and providing you with what you need than us. Have a browse of our website, we are completely honest and upfront about everything - no hidden costs, and pricing can be found on our website. There's a whole wealth of information on there but if anyone can help, it's us. All the best with your kitchen planning, I won't waffle on anymore than I have but if you would like a cuppa and a chat let us know.
