painted kitchens

Hi everyone, I’m hoping some experts can put me straight on the best type of kitchen cabinets to choose. I’ve compared numerous suppliers, but still non the wiser. People often say you should get a kitchen you can repaint in the future, but how do you know if that is the case? Many of those from magnet, howdens, diy kitchens etc are either foil/vinyl wrapped, or spray painted mdf or veneers. As I understand it, you can’t sand an mdf kitchen down and repaint it if that navy colour proves to be too on trend 5 years later :)

Any advice greatly appreciated.

It really depends what length of time you intend to keep the kitchen. If you are in your forever home and don't intend to change the kitchen for many years then I would make sure you get a good quality carcass, as doors can be changed/swapped out relatively easily and cheaply should you decide you don't like them. There is quite a few websites nowadways e.g. www.kitchendoorworkshop.co.uk that provide replacement doors.

Thanks for the reply. I honesty thought that carcasses are more or less the same these days and as long as they were relatively thick with a decent back panel you couldn’t go too wrong? I’m thinking about the external parts and hinges that take the knocks over the years, particularly from kids. Want something that could be touched up or repainted in the future and not sure if that is possible on the mdf cabinets.

Hi allyallyally3 we supply handmade painted kitchens, we offer Raw to be handpainted on site or pre painted (sprayed in our factory) both can be repainted in the future if you want a colour change. The general advice we give customers is if they have pets o young children (both tend to cause damage to a kitchen!) we would recommend getting a hand painted finish, this means you can then just get your pot out dab it on and it should be almost invisible. Whereas a spray painted kitchen will have a very clean finish, but touching up if scratched can be a bigger problem to get a nice finish hope this helps regards CKD Link to advice on our website

A painted kitchen painted well will take a great deal of wear. Bear in mind that the high street typically spray paints and only a couple of coats which not enough. Really you need two under coats, cut back in between applications and then two or three top coats, cut back in between. You also need to ensure that the final coat is applied on site once the kitchen is fitted and caulked. It should look like cast sugar when it's finished, and done properly it cannot be beaten. We add gesso into our top coats too to thicken it up. Your other option is spray pigmented lacquer but it doesn't look good on classical mouldings, cockbeads etc. Poorly painted and prepared coats will chip more easily, and all painted surfaces will chip, in the same way that doors and architraves do.

oak or painted kitchen?

Personally I think all oak is a dated look but I love to see just a few oak touches in a painted kitchen. Perhaps a chalky white, or a contemporary neutral with oak touches such as drawer boxes, pantry inserts, the inside of LED lit glass cabinets, pull out chopping boards and serving trays, inside of open shelf space units or maybe a statement canopy around the range. Although the look/colour has to be commercial I think any kitchen is elevated with thicker end panels, feature plinth, sophisticated pantry cabinets, dresser cabinets with fold back doors, having the right height cabinets to suit the architecture, integrated lighting, attractive end of island display options, and an attention to detail so that panels on cabinet doors all line thought.

Can't decide what colour to paint kitchen cupboards!

The bricks are dark and dinghy. Paint them white then perhaps a pale grey for the units would appeal to buyers. Don’t paint the units dark - in a recent survey I read it was one of the top things that put buyers off!
