The stairs are gorgeous! Is the entire case painted black?

Just wondering if both the tread and riser are painted black, or is there some contrast color that the picture does not show. Thanks so much!

Both the treads and risers are the same colour.

I'm an artist so apologies for focusing on the art... the space looks fantastic and I'm a fan of natural wood also but some of the painted designs above look fantastic too. Your funtiture tonally complimetns the staircase as it is and looks good too and as that is gorgeous strong floor pattern I think it unlikely you're going to be changing that. Personally I would change the rug/carpet at the front of the photo first bringing in something much lighter and simpler and without the intense pattern. I would change the gold frame on your picture also which would benefit from being simpler and lighter too... more contemporary as it were, and the same is true for the clock which needs toning down a bit as black is too strong. Simple to do. At the moment you have gold black and what looks like dark grey framing your wall decorations, once they all tonaly work together you will create space which is much easier on the eye. Whatever you decide to do with the wood will dictate which tones to use. At the moment though there is too much going on.... for me at least. Once you've decided on the above you're possible going to need to change the lamp shade too to fit with your lighter design... again very simple to do. Hope that helps..... Simon

Hello, you could replace with square spindles and post and a very plain handrail with a slight curve. You could paint the spindles to match the doors and the handrail and post black. This would give a simple, classical meets contemporary monochrome look.

It's interesting the mention of Insta. We were talking about this the other day - what looks good on a tiny square does not necessarily translate to real life. Things need to have impact on a small square to draw the eye, but in real life you need to live in a space and feel comfortable. I think we have all been sucked in at times! Anyway, Forza's previous mention about Skimming Stone is a good one. Greys tend to be blue based, green based or violet based. Blue based can look urban and tend towards cool, green based or violet based may be the way to go. Little Greene Slaked Lime is good, Skimming Stone woodwork, Elephants Breath walls Farrow and Ball etc.

Paint colour suggestions for hallway, stairs and landing

Hiya, we have a Victorian hallway and it is done very similar to Rukmini’s first image. We have a greeny grey under the dado (including the skirting and dado itself) and on the doors and architraves. It’s Blanket by Paint & Paper library which is a little darker than Rukmini’s pic. Then an off white above the dado and on the ceiling. It used to be off white all over and the grey definitely has made it darker. On the other hand it also feels smarter and shows the marks less! Swings and roundabouts. I wouldn’t have three colours, I would pick one colour plus off white above the dado/picture rail (Pointing seems sensible!!) Your tiles look browny grey so would suggest looking at Ammonite by F&B and its family of colours - (Cornforth White, Purbeck Stone). See below for the F&B families of greys. If you want bluey or greeny greys then Paint & Paper Library are a good source but be careful to see if they will go with your tiles.
