Any inspiration for a stair case in a 1930s house

Hi,

the photo is not that clear as we are in the middle of renovating. The stair case is not being replaced but the hand rail and spindles and Neopost are. I am looking for any ideas I can do For the spindles but keep as classic and simple as I can as I haven't picked my stair case runner yet. The colors I've decided on so far are

My front door is black

floor light

internal doors white

hall wall paint strong white by farrow and ball

I don't know if I should keep the spindles as simple as possible and just maybe modernize them slightly and just paint the handrail but any ideas will be greatly appreciated:

Hello, you could replace with square spindles and post and a very plain handrail with a slight curve. You could paint the spindles to match the doors and the handrail and post black. This would give a simple, classical meets contemporary monochrome look.

Looks great! Only issue you might have is removing the fireplace as it's an adjoing wall and you 'usually' share a chimney. If you have your own separate stack then it should be ok to put a lintel above and remove the bottom. Just thought I would mention that as we researched it ourselves ;o) Also - moving the kitchen - is your adjoining wall on the right? If so, then you might struggle to get all the waste etc out ie it would have to go under the floor to get back out to the drains. If that is the case then I would suggest blocking off the door from the hallway and keeping the entrance into the rear reception room and keeping the kitchen area where it is. But just re-modelling it. I would also suggest first, finding out where you can put support steels to remove walls as this will affect the room layout and you want to avoid having any posts floating in the middle of the room - if possible.

Looking at the floor plan - there is lots you can do but I personally would wait until you know about the loft conversion or extension. Extending across the kitchen to make a more useful kitchen diner or kitchen with family room and doors into the garden at the back with the dining area kept where it is would be good. The current back family room and front lounge could be altered to anything really ie downstairs shower room between a bedroom. Office, second lounge etc etc. It’s upstairs for you that seems to be the issue so I would get someone in ASAP to check out the loft and see if it’s possible and get some costings. The stairs could possibly go with the current shower room is so you don’t lose a bedroom

Hi You would not need to get rid of the box room, our advice is to check if you would have 2m height clearance and if you do than no need to get rid of the box or open up the space and have it open. Usually prefered option is to keep the box room and have the stairs separate as long there is minimum 2 meters clearance in height from your first step upwards. This can be achieved with a smart design and stairs would not feel steep either. If the light is an issue why not fit a velux or skylight right above the new staircase? it will allow a lot of natural light in the hallway. To go an extra mile you could recess the loft landing by say 15cm too to make the first floor areas more open this will give an illusion of open and not compact space and finally if you are a fan of glass balustrade and how it can maximise compact or any space and allow more natural light have a look at the images. What colour slabs/block paving have you got? When we lived in Brighton we had a rendered house with white windows. We painted it Pointing (Farrow and Ball) as we didn't like the cold white other houses had but didn't want it too yellowy like a lot of Masonry paint. It just took the edge off and looked a bit warmer. As your roof tiles are warm, I think the current colour looks a bit too warm and sickly with it, so calming it down would help.
