Mid-Century Nordic Retreat in St Albans

We were delighted to take on the renovation of this 1960 two-storey semi-detached house, located in one of St Alban's prestigious conservation areas. Our goal was to create a space that seamlessly connected with the south facing garden while maximising the abundance of natural light in the main living areas. Additionally, the homeowners desired the addition of two more bedrooms and bathrooms to accommodate their growing needs.
To fulfil these requirements, we made the decision to demolish the detached garage and create space for a stunning new kitchen that effortlessly flows into the main living and dining area. This central space serves as the heart of the home, flooded with natural light from large roof lights. Furthermore, we installed a double-sided fireplace, connecting the rear living spaces to the front north facing snug. The French oak cabinetry, carefully designed to meet the family's everyday needs, includes features like a hidden coat cabinet and a dedicated space for firewood.
The upper floors underwent a complete transformation as well. We fully renovated the existing bedrooms, repurposed the box room into a family bathroom, and created a new loft space. Overcoming the challenge of planning constraints within the conservation area, we successfully added a new main bedroom with a dressing area and a spacious en-suite.
Throughout the home, the natural French oak flooring seamlessly extends to the stairs and loft, creating a cohesive atmosphere. The glass balustrade and oak handrail further contribute to this light-filled aesthetic. In contrast, the minimalistic kitchen in matte white provides a perfect balance to the warmth of the oak floors.
To maintain a sense of simplicity, tranquillity and functionality, the furniture and lighting in the renovated space embrace the mid-century modern style. This design choice ensures that the space remains both inviting and comfortable for the homeowners and their guests.
We are proud to have transformed this 1960 semi-detached house into a modern and elegant home that fully meets the needs of the family.
