The Victorian Gem in St Albans

We were approached by our client to renovate this Victorian three storey terraced house in the heart of St Alban’s conservation area. The original floor plan was long and narrow at ground floor level, with small rear windows, which meant that the kitchen area was dark and compact.

The brief included complete renovation of the house, addition of storage and rethinking the ground floor plan to add natural light, a utility room, a bathroom and a coat room.

We planned the ground floor interior layout to include a utility room at the rear to minimise the original narrow and long footprint. Connected to the kitchen with a frosted crittall style door for additional natural light. The kitchen itself strikes a harmonious balance between contrasting cabinet colours and a minimal style. Accessorised with vibrant accessories to create a dynamic visual impact.

Despite its playful use of colour and texture, the overall aesthetic exudes understated elegance and is pleasing to the eye.

The interior features a neutral and serene ambiance that seamlessly incorporates Victorian details, adding a touch of elegance and historical charm.
In the reception rooms, the Victorian reproduction fireplace, typical of the house’s period, is a standout feature, while the Victorian cornice is artfully juxtaposed with understated cupboard details and contemporary furnishings.

The stairs feature a dark-painted handrail, which adds a striking contrast to the surrounding elements. This use of contrast is a key design element that is also reflected in the vibrant colour scheme and textural interplay found throughout the space. The minimal artwork further emphasises the colour scheme and enhances the dynamic visual impact of the overall design.
