Wood Green House

This contemporary rear extension project is located in a characterful period home in London and reflects a seamless balance between bold modern interventions and the preservation of traditional architectural charm. The client’s brief was to improve the layout and light levels of their ground floor while introducing a stylish and highly functional kitchen-dining space that better connects with the garden. The resulting scheme delivers a striking transformation that enhances everyday living through refined details, natural light, and smart spatial planning.

At the heart of the extension is the new kitchen, designed with a rich palette of graphite-grey shaker cabinetry, soft gold handles, and pristine white quartz worktops. The central island serves as a generous preparation zone and social anchor, enhanced by integrated storage and a statement black tap that ties in with the pendant lighting above. The layout facilitates effortless movement between cooking, dining, and entertaining, creating a space that adapts fluidly to different occasions.

The dining area features a solid live-edge wooden table, surrounded by plush midnight blue velvet chairs and anchored by a large, black dome pendant light with a gold interior. This tactile combination of finishes and textures evokes a sense of warmth and elegance while still maintaining a clean, contemporary edge. Rooflights over the dining area punctuate the ceiling in a dynamic layout, drawing in daylight even on overcast days and highlighting the sculptural quality of the ceiling soffits.

Frameless glazing and Crittall-style bifold doors invite the outside in and allow for uninterrupted views of the garden. The extension’s striking asymmetric geometry—including the angled clerestory window—creates visual interest externally and internally, casting changing light patterns throughout the day. These large glazed elements ensure the home remains visually and physically connected to nature, encouraging outdoor dining and play.

Attention to detail continues in the hallway, where bespoke cabinetry beneath the staircase provides valuable hidden storage while retaining the historic charm of the original balustrade, now repainted in crisp white with contrasting black handrail. This transition between the old and the new has been carefully choreographed to respect the character of the house while introducing a fresh new rhythm to the interior layout.

The ground-floor cloakroom and shower room exemplify elegant minimalism with their use of soft neutral stone-effect tiles, brushed brass fittings, and ambient lighting. A floating vanity unit with under-sink LED strip lights and a backlit mirror adds a subtle hotel-inspired touch, while the herringbone tiled shower floor offers texture and visual interest underfoot.

This project is not only a showcase of spatial and material harmony, but also a highly successful demonstration of how modern architecture can elevate a traditional property without overpowering its original spirit. By focusing on light, flow, and refined finishes, the extension enriches both the function and beauty of the home—creating an environment that feels at once timeless, luxurious, and entirely liveable.
