chemistrykaren I can see what you mean but at least the lovely Purple Beech will be able to grow a bit better in the future. I think if you had a tree planted in your garden with the crown at a lower level it may actually distract you from looking at the building beyond anyway. Hiding ugly buildings and views is all about distracting the eye- it is similar to having soft colours in planting schemes, for example sometimes if you out a red flower or bright yellow in a border staring back at you, your eye stops and doesn't go beyond. I think distraction is the key here and once you are able to do a bit in the garden which is hard, I understand looking after your mother, you can put in some simple bamboo canes and play with where you think the best place would be to hide the ugly view for a tree and planting.

Claudia De Yong Garden Design - Claudia, thanks for continued helpful comments. We'll see. First things first - I'm seeing a planning officer on Monday, and the tree surgeon on Tuesday. (Also, I'll need permission to cut the tree as it's a conservation area.)
