Top Bathroom Design Trends for 2015
Looking to revamp your bathroom in the new year? Check out the very latest looks and get inspired
Over the past 12 months, I have scouted round exhibition halls at home and abroad in a bid to bring you a round-up of the freshest looks for the bathroom in 2015. Here are a selection of my favourites.
Gold fittings
Copper is not the only metal making its mark in the bathroom. For fans of the finer things in life, the good news is that the gold rush continues, with manufacturers giving the Midas touch to brassware, basins and accessory ranges. Floor-to-ceiling gold can be a bit too much for most, but you could also give a nod to the trend in a neutral bathroom with subtle but luxurious gold fittings.

Bathroom living
How about bathroom designs that wouldn’t look out of place in the bedroom or living room? Dubbed ‘bathroom living’, this trend has captured the collective imagination this season. Cue baths that incorporate bookshelves (check out Mastella’s Kelly Book bath) or vanity units that look more like dressing tables (see Monica Graffeo’s Esperanto collection for Rexa Design). A good way to dip into this look is by introducing a small-scale comfy upholstered chair.

The personal touch
We’re all individuals, so it’s only natural that we should want to put a personal stamp on our homes. If this season’s bathroom trends are anything to go by, we are growing in confidence, with more of us daring to express our passions and pastimes through our interiors. Here, a patchwork of colourful Moroccan tiles from Encaustic Tiles makes a feature of the floor, and strikes a contrast with the minimalism of the white tiles on the wall.

Home-spa solutions
In an age when time to relax is in short supply, savvy homeowners are investing in products designed to create a spa-inspired space. The beauty is that there is a solution to suit every budget, from rain showers with the option of aromatherapy and chromotherapy functions, to whirlpool bathtubs that offer a variety of pressures and programmes. If space and budget are no constraint, there is even the option of installing a home steam room or sauna. Options range from prefabricated cabins to completely bespoke solutions.

Introduce wood
Natural materials work beautifully in bathroom design, not least because they lend themselves well to creating a relaxing retreat that soothes the soul after a long day. A timber bath is a standout choice; often made of teak, they are naturally beautiful and extremely hardwearing, with excellent insulating properties. This beautiful bath is filled by a tap installed in the ceiling for a truly original statement.
Be inspired by how wood featured as a star material at Tent London 2014 or find more bathrooms with Japanese baths.

Creative surfaces
Until recently, lacquered surfaces were the default choice for the average bathroom. But times are changing, and manufacturers are serving up more interesting suggestions in wood, concrete and even cement. Solid-surface materials such as Corian are a smart choice, not least because they are easy to clean, resistant to mildew and even repairable if necessary. Warm to the touch and available in a multitude of colours, Corian is easily shaped and will create a sleek, streamlined look in your bathroom. The owners of this contemporary bathroom opted for a Medea finish.

Open storage
Following in the footsteps of a similar trend for the kitchen, a mixture of open and closed storage is the hallmark of current bathroom design. While there is no doubt that this makes for a more interesting bathroom, remember to take care when selecting what to have on display: hide everyday basics behind closed doors and keep more decorative objects out on show.

Textural finishes
Introducing textured wall tiles to your bathroom is a popular new way to add interest to a plain or neutral design scheme. Good looks aside, tiles are durable and come in a huge range of sizes, colours and designs to suit all budgets. These stunning tiles were sourced from Spanish brand Porcelanosa.

Copper is currently the king of metallics, bringing effortless warmth and beauty to bathroom schemes. Copper retains heat really well, making it ideal for those who love a lengthy soak. What’s more, copper baths are no longer exclusive to traditional settings. For a contemporary spin on a classic, the owners of this striking bathroom have encased the bath in a super-sleek surround.
