Keep your toes warmA long, slim rug, running the full length of a galley kitchen, can be forgiving on bare feet, if that’s how you roll as you cook. This idea, demonstrated here by Imperfect Interiors, has the benefit of catching drops from the sink and keeping you cosy as you stand at the hob, as well as while you venture into your most-used cupboards and drawers. Again, embrace the old (and richly patterned) and enjoy how it feels underfoot.Need help with your home? Browse interior designers in the Houzz Professionals Directory.

The first phase involved a reconfiguration of the internal walls and redecoration throughout, while the second included a side-return extension (where the run of kitchen base units is now located) and the installation of a picture window and sliding glass doors. “It was important to have a masterplan of how the two phases would fit together,” interior designer Beth Dadswell says. “There were two kitchens,” she explains, “but neither of them was big enough. So we spent time looking at how to open up the spaces to allow more light in, and to encourage better use of all of the rooms.”Kitchen, Puccini. Worktop, Caesarstone. Take on that projectWe often assume buyers will want to do their own renovations, but Zoe Kenworthy notes, “We’ve seen a decline in the number of clients willing to take on major works. I feel that’s because people today want more quality time for themselves with friends and family.“Without a doubt, we find clients will pay a premium for an on-trend property that has an open-plan kitchen and living layout,” she adds. “Islands are definitely on the wish list, as are en suites [in the bedroom].”However, she does offer a word of caution. “That said, clients will typically put location first, especially in an area renowned for its schools and excellent commuter links.”To see more from any of the designers featured in this article, click on the image and follow the links to the professional’s profile.

Take in the viewIf you have the opportunity to create a picture window in your kitchen, make the most of it by incorporating a bench seat. Here, the wide windowsill is deep enough to double up as a comfortable seat with a view of the garden.
