The yard is massed with this awesome ground cover, Mahonia repens, an evergreen CA native plant that gets splashed with red and burgundy in the fall & winter, yellow flowers in the spring and then blue berries. It is resistant to oak root fungus and deer (which this yard has) and thrives in sun or shade! What more could you want?
