Wanting to maintain the traditional look of their eye-catching fireplace, we decided against mounting the TV above the mantel. We designed custom cabinets that flank each side of the fireplace and discreetly house the television components. By faux painting these cabinets using the color of the surrounding walls, this dominating feature wall effortlessly blends in with the rest of this space. Mid century modern furniture in teal and mustards give a stylish feel to this compact living room. Floating alcove shelves and a mantlepiece were built set off against striking deep coloured walls painted in Farrow & Ball's Stiffkey blue and Plummett grey. An unused alcove area was zoned to be a useful work space with a two-tone wooden desk. Carefully curated art deco-inspired pieces were also added including an impactful hexagonal gold hanging mirror on the chimney breast; dramatic gold and frosted glass domed pendant lights; and a stylish marble drinks trolley. This living room was designed for my great clients that required a stylish and comfortable space for entertaining friends and relaxing after a long day. The barn door was designing custom for this couple. It's double sided, with the same beautiful finish on both sides. We also designed the custom board and batten wall treatment around the perimeter of this space and into the hallway to give the space some depth as well as a great architectural wall feature. Most of the accessories in this space are from Pottery Barn as well as World Market. The sofa was purchased by the homeowners before we began this project.

Paint went from a yellowish peach to gray, heavy curtains that only originally covered the doors were tossed and new Henny Rand curtains from IKEA were installed high above to show off the ceiling height. TV was moved from where the bar cart is and heavy, overstuffed sofa was given away to make way for more functional, fresh room. All furniture but the gray chair and tv/tv stand were brought in from my collection.

When it comes to the layout of your living room, it will depend on what pieces of furniture you have – but how do you choose what living room furniture to add, whether you’re refreshing your living room design or starting from scratch? The best place to start is with the seating – one corner sofa will usually seat three to four people, and if that’s all you think you’ll need, then you can leave it at that. Placing your sofa along the longest wall helps to make the most of the space, but think about where you want the focus of the room to be, too. Apart from the standard bookcases, side tables and TV units, there are a few other handy living room storage ideas you can invest in. As mentioned before, if you have the room and budget for it, a built-in storage unit could be the way forward. With a well-built unit you could hide your TV, DVDs, players, books, video consoles and all sorts away in one place. If you don’t quite have a large enough area for one, you could look at shelving – either side of the chimney breast is a great place to install shelving if you have one in your living room. And don’t forget living room furniture such as sofas, benches and ottomans that lift up to reveal hidden storage; providing seating and storing space at the same time.
