Favour fabricAn upholstered piece can help to make a living room look more inviting than a hard surface of equivalent dimensions, and here an ottoman boosts comfort levels as it takes the place of a coffee table. In a curtain-free room like this one, more fabric is a useful sound absorber, too. Both the corner sofa and the ottoman are muted in grey here, keeping the ambience relaxing, with subtle contrast provided by the velvety finish of the ottoman and its tailored buttoning. Consider an attractive tray to sit on top of it if you need a hard surface for drinks. Is it over for corner sofas?

Air and prepareIt’s easy to forget about the invisible aspects of a home, but they’re vital for good viewings. Before anyone arrives, air stuffy rooms and ensure condensation has cleared from bathrooms (early showers and a re-switching on of extractor fans that have timed out too soon might be in order). If it’s cold, don’t forget to put the heating on, either. A neatly folded throw on the sofa will emphasise the cosiness of your home when it’s chilly outside, too.

Maximise the cornerA corner sofa is a great way to provide the luxury of lounging, even if your room isn’t massive. It also solves the problem of how to lay things out as it does most of the work for you. This chic grey model sits right up against the wall, but doesn’t swamp things as the dimensions match the room.Inevitably, a corner sofa will become the focus of your living room, so think hard about the colour, shape, size and number of seats before you commit to buying one. In this compact, but stylish space, it works well with an ottoman in place of a more traditional coffee table.

saving space Eclectic Living Room by Paul Craig Photography Paul Craig Photography Email Save Seating areas. The same logic of dining seating applies to the living room as well: One large, continuous seat will give you a comfortable place to stretch out on every day. Several compact chairs (which can be pulled from the dining area when needed) or a plush ottoman can maximize seating when you have company. Notice how in this room, space for end tables was traded for more seating space — worth it when you need that afternoon nap.

I love the splash of colour from the cushion and flowers to otherwise neutral colours.
