The marble tile backsplash unites the kitchen and pantry visually with a subtle but lively pattern. The colors in the backsplash tie all of the different elements of the kitchen together. The tile pattern is both traditional and "edgy." It is a 2 x 2 pattern, but each square is cut either in matchstick thin slivers or on a single diagonal thereby giving the vertical surface a lively look in a traditional design. One focus of the new kitchen is the IKEA farm sink that works almost like a command post with its two large bowls and pull-out faucet. Glass cabinets surrounding the window and in the pantry add a bit of sparkle with the reflective surface of the glass and allow special objects to be displayed. From a working perspective, the owner says the one of the best features of the kitchen design is the new lighting. Recessed LED downlights and LED undercabinet lights give illumination for all tasks. The undercabinet LED lighting does not get hot and it uses very little energy. They are mounted towards the front of the cabinet while a continuous strip of plug mold runs along the back part of the upper cabinets providing many outlets throughout the working areas of the kitchen without being visible. We moved the sink from the diagonal corner and centered it under the smaller window. On the east wall, we removed the fin walls that projected into the room to house the old refrigerator. By not putting wall cabinets on this wall, we created the open feeling they wanted, and provided the space for the wall mounted television. The wall is faced with 2” x 4” white glazed tiles. The new long quartz counter can be utilized as a buffet for dinner parties. JRY & Co.

The challenge for this project was to build a completely new kitchen in a newly added-on area of this home. The old kitchen was on the other side to the house and had poor lighting, making entertaining difficult due to to both size and location in the home. We designed the layout of this kitchen and chose wood finishes that would complement and enhance the natural lighting. We also wanted to showcase the high-quality curly ash wood, and it natural grain. The result of our work was a brilliant and comfortable kitchen that stands up to daily use and offers more storage, more counter space, and room to entertain and cook with family.

You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage.
