This home’s kitchen isn’t large and needed to somehow hold a mudroom area as the detached garage enters into the space. I carefully planned out all storage needs and we were able to add a wide, double door cabinet closet by the back door. The upper area holds coats and clutter. The lower doors have hooks and boot trays for backpacks and shoes. Paneling the Subzero fridge helps with softening the weight of the large appliance, as does the panel on the dishwasher. Little details like the skirt on the toe area and the beautiful hood and island posts make this smaller work space truly special!

The kitchen of this home was a labor of love and everything was carefully planned and executed to ensure it was a work of art, in a sense. At the heart of it is the 10 foot wide by 4 foot deep White Oak island with plentiful room for 4 people to sit comfortably. They choose gray as the cabinet color, specifically Benjamin Moore Gray Owl. Pike wanted a color that wasn't too bold and would take away from the other elements of the space, but we also didn't want to just go with the easy choice, white. Gray cabinets are in trend right now and for good reason as we are sure many people go through that same logic we went through. The cabinetry was custom crafted in Charlotte and is all beaded inset. A cabinet front Thermador fridge can be found at the far right of this picture. Tying the whole space together is the mosaic backslash tile. The tile is visually stunning and brought all the color tones of the space into harmony. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style.
