Dutton Architects Inc.
Dutton Architects did an extensive renovation of a post and beam mid-century modern house in the canyons of Beverly Hills. The house was brought down to the studs, with new interior and exterior finishes, windows and doors, lighting, etc. A secure exterior door allows the visitor to enter into a garden before arriving at a glass wall and door that leads inside, allowing the house to feel as if the front garden is part of the interior space. Similarly, large glass walls opening to a new rear gardena and pool emphasizes the indoor-outdoor qualities of this house. photos by Undine Prohl

A brick artisan was hired to match the ornate pattern of the original house. We reused as much as we could from the demolition and filled in with reclaimed bricks of a similar age.

Pool with beamed ceiling:
Set in a remote district just outside Halfway, Oregon, this working ranch required a water reserve for fire fighting for the newly constructed ranch house. This pragmatic requirement was the catalyst for the unique design approach — having the water reserve serve a dual purpose: fitness and firefighting. Borrowing from the surrounding landscape, two masses — one gabled mass and one shed form — are skewed to each other, recalling the layered hills that surround the home. Internally, the two masses give way to an open, unencumbered space. The use of wood timbers, so fitting for this setting, forms the rhythm to the design, with glass infill opening the space to the surrounding landscape. The calm blue pool brings all of these elements together, serving as a complement to the green prairie in summer and the snow-covered hills in winter.

This space was just an unused covered area that spanned between the home and a covered outdoor dining area. Being that it is covered and has perfect proximity to the pool and the rest of the patio, it was the perfect spot for our outdoor kitchen. The all stainless steel cabinets from Kalamazoo and the Caesarstone countertops make this a kitchen with staying power and tons of stylishness. This kitchen has an icemaker, Kegerator, refrigerator and a serious grill with and even more serious hood. We brought in the traditional touches of the home with the lighting and provided more light by placing them in front of these zinc framed mirrors.
It all came together to provide the perfect outdoor kitchen for the family to spend time together out by the pool with everything you would need to enjoy the time and each other.

Designer, Randy Angell The "before" photos on this backyard show a non descript, typical 30 year old pool. The homeowners had no desire to "play it safe" and so, we didn't! We utilized th simple, straight lines of the existing pool to lay out a multi level space for an outdoor living area, a sun lounge area, and a cooking and dining area.
