This was a great kitchen transformation with great clients. The original kitchen was dark and closed in. We removed a support column and added a new steel beam so the dining area could be fully open to the kitchen space. We enlarged the opening in between the front room and kitchen to further open the space. Adding a large new window bump out behind the sink added the illusion of extra space as well as allowing great natural light and beautiful views of the property. The clients wanted simple lines and warm tones so we chose the Tacoma door style by Fieldstone cabinetry in cherry wood with a butterscotch finish. The Kashmir Gold granite countertops have a great natural pallet of colors that tie the whole look together. The new stainless chimney vent hood with adjacent floating shelves add to the clean open feel. The large format tile back splash from Porcelanosa Tile provide a great seamless look to the back wall. The original tired wood flooring was refinished and brought back to life showing all the great natural character with the new lighter brighter finish.

This is a large kitchen, so I designed a refrigerator on the cook's side of the island and another on the bar side of the island so those eating could access drinks/ice, etc without disturbing the cook. Open concept wins again! This kitchen features natural stained wood floors throughout, along with black cabinets and sueded, YES! Sueded countertops. The client also desired a smart kitchen, so we made it happen. All of the appliances can be either started or monitored via the manufacturers smartphone app. As to not block the view into the family room, we opted for these nearly invisible glass globe pendants to keep the line of sight clean and as clear as possible. We went simple with the back splash, white oversized subway tile with black grout, allowing these black cabinets to stand out as the highlight of this kitchen. Did I mention the countertops are sueded?

In this kitchen, we updated the existing cabinets by installing Cambria 3cm Quartz countertop In Bradshaw color and Legend Titan 6x6 Porcelain tiles with Bliss Linear Silver Aspen Blend accent backsplash. Also installed was a new Blanco Diamond equal bowl sink in biscotti color with Delta Cassidy single pull down faucet in Artic stainless finish.

Modern Traditional Kitchen for a lovely couple in the Bay Area. The Fieldstone and Forte paprika cherry cabinetry invite you into the kitchen and give warmth to the room. The Bainbridge door style used in this design is a beautiful traditional raised panel door with clean lines and details. The light natural tones from the polished porcelain floors by Emser Tile and the natural tones from the Havenwood chevron porcelain backsplash by MSI serve as a great accompaniment to the cabinetry. The pop in this kitchen comes from the stunning blue Cambria Skye countertop on the kitchen island and is a great complimentary color to the red tone radiating from the cherry cabinetry. The tall celings painted in Malibu Beige by Kelly Moore in this kitchen allow for a light an airy feel, and this feeling is felt even more by a mirrored backsplash in the Hutch area, as well as the diffused glass cabinet doors in the hutch and island cabinetry. Accents of polished chrome hardware from Top Knobs Hardware allow for a sparkle and shine in the kitchen that compliments the stainless steel appliances. All of these materials were found and designed in our wonderful showroom and were brought to reality here in this beautiful kitchen.

Designer: Paul Dybdahl Photographer: Shanna Wolf Designer’s Note: One of the main project goals was to develop a kitchen space that complimented the homes quality while blending elements of the new kitchen space with the homes eclectic materials. Japanese Ash veneers were chosen for the main body of the kitchen for it's quite linear appeals. Quarter Sawn White Oak, in a natural finish, was chosen for the island to compliment the dark finished Quarter Sawn Oak floor that runs throughout this home. The west end of the island, under the Walnut top, is a metal finished wood. This was to speak to the metal wrapped fireplace on the west end of the space. A massive Walnut Log was sourced to create the 2.5" thick 72" long and 45" wide (at widest end) living edge top for an elevated seating area at the island. This was created from two pieces of solid Walnut, sliced and joined in a book-match configuration. The homeowner loves the new space!! Detail of black cabinets with gold hardware. Old orangey oak cabinets were refinished to a light natural with satin finish on the upper cabinets. The transformation was subtle but impactful. The lower cabinets were painted a rich black. This tied in the black appliances and modernized the whole space! The same hardware was used on both uppers and lowers, but black on the top and gold on the lowers. Very chic! The old glazed ceramic tiles were demo'ed and new porcelain tiles were installed. The vertical orientation created visual height and is more modern than the traditional subway installation. Tiles were matched to the existing Corian countertops to give a seamless look to the counter to backsplash transition. The veined tiles up-date the look dramatically!

However, if the layout doesn’t work, especially if you have a small kitchen, then there’s no necessity to add in a kitchen island. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. That said, if you do have the room, take a look at some kitchen island ideas to see if the designs inspire you for your kitchen. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

When picking out kitchen units and cupboard styles for a fitted kitchen, you’ll first want to consider the more practical questions – how many units do you need? How many cupboards and drawers do you need? Do you need extra kitchen storage built into your units? It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. Of course, grey kitchens are the neutral colour choice du jour and can be paired with pale and rich shades alike if you want your fitted kitchen cupboards to contrast with your worktop, splashback, floor, or all of the above.
