Built with the clients wants and needs in mind, this weekend retreat provides them a place for pure relaxation and tranquility. With the client being a developer in the surrounding region, they were very attuned to being hands on in the design and construction process. Attention to detail was key, making sure the home was built exactly the way they wanted. This home features radiant hydronic heat, state of the art security and home automation, lutron and crestron lighting/shading controls, true board and batten cedar siding, local granite around entire 1st floor, and a built-in masonry barbecue designed onsite to incorporate the lifestyle of our clients. It is a true honor to state that our clients use this second home every chance they get, being up almost every weekend of the year fully using this retreat to get away from the day to day stresses of life.

Stone also plays an important role in creating the desired character for this project. This stone terrace shown here uses a dry laid technique using Chief River veneer and full range random cut blue stone deck.

Back yard space for entertaining includes a gas fire-pit, infinity-edge water fountain, and curving steel and cedar pergola. Floor is paved with Cut Bluestone and features a soft green divider. Rain garden helps collect and divert water around the patio and down the slope. Ipe deck with stainless steel cable railings and wide easy-to-navigate steps provides dining space next to the kitchen and access to the patio below. Dry seating area below deck provides another intimate space. Front yard design takes advantage of mature maples, while updating plantings and adding lovely cedar and steel screens.

For this Boston-area former hunting lodge, featured in Outside the Not So Big House by Julie Moir Messervy and Sarah Susanka, JMMDS created a landscape design that anchors the house in the site and complements its Tuscan-inspired architectural update. An informal breakfast terrace of quarried granite offers views of the pond through pruned hemlock trees. Photo: Grey Crawford.

The woodland mulch path provides a transition from space to space and culminates at a recessed bluestone fire-pit surrounded by a 2¼-inch thick irregular bluestone tight-jointed seating area dotted with flower containers. The custom-made copper cover protects the fire pit when not in use.
