EZ Plans Architects

“I grew up with a father who is a master contractor. In my adult life, I have been involved in countless home renovations, so I've always thought architects are a waste of time & money. They always seem to be writing checks with the customers' money, and have no basis in reality or practicality: they seem so frivolous. Hubby and I bought a mid-century modern home that had been turned into a tuscan style by the previous owners. (can you imagine?) We needed help getting approval from the local city planning board who are a NIGHTMARE to deal with (average of 8-10 plan checks, most cities do 2-3!?) We hired Glen with EZPlans to help us. Glen handled acrimonious city officials, seeming design impossibilities (and even a few vastly different design ideas between hubby and I) with tact, professionalism, and good humor. Dealing with EZ Plans was a breeze. I am so impressed with their vision, their professionalism, and the very talented, creative (and practical) architects they hire. They are exceptional communicators, and are as intuitive as they are talented. EZ Plans turned a simple contractor grade design we could have come up with ourselves, to a design that respected the mid-century bones of our home, and brought it to the practical standards we needed the home to suit. The design they came up with easily increased the value of our renovation tenfold. the only direction they had from me was "I want to respect the home's bones with materials in their natural element, nothing frivolous, but we need the house to be super specialized for our dogs." (maybe that's a bit frivolous....) They took this and ran with it. Incidentally, they are AVID dog lovers (almost as nutty as hubby and I are, ) so they came up with such cool suggestions that will make our old dogs' lives (and our lives) easier. As someone who has scoffed at the need for an architect, (come on, my dad is a contractor!) I can assure anyone: the design of a talented architect is worlds apart from what a contractor, or even designer, could come up with. They take things to another level. Glen increased the value of the renovation by making the design in line with architectural design elements, not current trends that would be outdated quickly after installation. More importantly, they made changes to the home to fit OUR lifestyle and needs, instead of us changing our needs and lifestyles to accommodate the home. This is the difference: architects build homes, contractors build houses. Hubby and I are so pleased with our experience at EZPlans. They make incredible planning, design and architecture...easy. :)”

“I was looking for an architect that would be able to transform my galley kitchen into a kitchen/great room combination without having to bump out any areas of the home. When Kurt presented his plan I was amazed at his ingenuity, creativity and the plans' ease of execution. Moreover, as a newbie home renovator, Kurt assisted in patiently answering my endless questions and helped me with the endless design decisions. In addition, he deftly and professionally handled some "interesting" personalities on the job. He also returned my calls and emails promptly. I am so thankful for his help and plan on using him for my next project, phase #2, the exterior!”

“I am truly very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with mbb architect for my remodeling project of my home. This is the first out of many remodeling experiences that I have had where I felt my remodeling needs were understood, valued and heard. I am impressed by the artistic talent, the vision and creativity. I would strongly recommend this company based on their level of professionalism and passion for design. I was further impressed by the architects' ability to gather relevant information and ability to help me make decisions. The architect was highly involved throughout the project and very responsive to my calls and questions throughout. This remodeling project has been very positive and I attribute that to the dedication, hard work and professional work conducted by mbb.”
Whitcomb Design

“We had a leak in our upstairs bathtub. Whitcomb Design discovered that the tub had been incorrectly chosen and installed in a manner that leakage was inevitable. The problem was corrected by installing a higher-quality bathtub with proper design. It has not leaked since that time. Additionally, the water-damaged sub-flooring was also replaced, new floor covering of our choice laid (and a few weeks later, the remnants of the floor covering were installed in the downstairs bathroom), a new bathroom cabinet installed to our specifications, a new sink, plumbing, and granite top installed, bathtub tiling designed and installed, including a new recess for holding razors, shampoo, conditioner, etc., in the bathtub enclosure, a new mirrored medicine cabinet purchased and installed above the new sink, new bathroom lighting installed, new bathtub plumbing installed, including a raised shower head, and new ceiling access in the downstairs bathroom (and repair of the water-damaged ceiling), and a new high-efficiency, taller toilet installed. All of the work was done to perfection and at a reasonable cost, and we love our new bathroom. That project was completed about two years ago. Earlier this year we had Whitcomb Design inspect some dry rot in the eaves and under the rain gutters in the front exterior part of our home. The roofing (installed 30 years ago) was at least partially to blame. The damaged wood was replaced, the two layers of shingle roofing were removed, new superior roofing materials were installed, including better and larger rain gutters and down spouts, damage to the air conditioning return pipes was noted and repaired (without additional cost to us), gutters and down spouts were color coordinated with the newly painted eaves. Several of the down spouts were relocated, and the gutter slopes adjusted for better flow. One of the new "down spouts" was replaced with a beautiful copper "rain chain"; and a new solar-powered attic fan was installed on the upper roof to keep summer attic temperatures lower. Though not a part of the contract, which was thoroughly discussed with us and approved by us, the contractor, at his own time and cost, repaired and repainted our curb mailbox to match the newly-painted eaves, repaired the latches on both garden gates, plugged a hole in the side of the house where air-conditioning plumbing done several years ago left a hole big enough for a large bird to have built a nest inside the house, more securely attached incoming power lines to the back roof, and secured the rain chain by stringing a small steel cable through the copper funnels, securing it to the roof and to an underground pipe to discourage would-be thieves from "harvesting" the copper. The contractor also installed new carbon dioxide detectors in the upstairs hall and in the downstairs study, and checked the existing smoke detectors, finding one that was faulty and needed replacing and arranged for all the work to be inspected for adherence to city ordinances. Not only are we intending to use the same contractor for future work on our home, but we highly recommend Whitcomb Design to anyone who wants a home repair job done well, on schedule, and at a reasonable price.”
