“My husband's grandfather is going to come live with us so we can give him more care as he ages. We hired Stephen to design a master bed/bath addition that has ADA-accessibility for Grandpa, as well as a kitchen & dining remodel on our small, ~925 sq ft, 2 bed, 1 bath 1935 cottage. We are still in the process of finalizing the design and are getting ready to hire a contractor for the project. Stephen has been great to work with so far. He is friendly, thorough, thoughtful and very creative. Throughout this long process of narrowing down what we want our house to be he has patiently and carefully listened to all our ideas, concerns and needs, given us great ideas of his own, answered all of our questions, and has incorporated everything we want into a ~1420 sq ft, 3 bed, 2.5 bath floor plan. “Had some decisions to make, as we wanted to add to our family, and could no longer live in our 2 bedroom 1 bath house. We could either move or build up. We chose to build up to a 4 bedroom 3 bath, and are ecstatic with the results. Although my wife's concern was having all the bedrooms on one floor, mine was that the remodel keep the same historic architectural detail that attracted me to East Sacramento to begin with. Cue in Mills Builders which is run like a finely tuned pitching machine. You have the starter, Jonathan Mills, who's work I had seen around the neighborhood back in the height of the construction boom, kept the right people even though he had to scale back in the current economy, and was able to bring our vision to fruition with the help of designer John Packowski. That, and he owned a home in East Sac and only moved to Clarksburg because of his growing family sold us on the deal. After the initial stages, the middle reliever is Danny DePiazza, who is the project manager. He was always timely to our requests and kept a firm deadline. Finally, the closer comes in. Seth was able to handle all of our punch-list needs. I figure if you are going to spend 5-6 months day-in, day-out making decisions that you are going to have to live with for the rest of your life, there are few people who can say such positive things about such a big project. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't change a thing. Go with Mills Builders; you'll be happy you did.”

“We contacted Lauren Vaage after exploring an Ikea upgrade to our circa 1960s kitchen. We realized that trying to fit an Ikea “package” into our space was forcing mediocre materials into a less than optimal layout. We looked for help and based on the beautiful and creative work we saw on his web page we decided to contact Lauren. He helped us re-examine our goals for our home and to think more holistically about how we wanted to organize the kitchen so as to better integrate it with our outdoor space and our open plan living area. Lauren brought in experts to help us upgrade our HVAC and to plan for a future solar addition. Lauren’s vision and artistic approach to the project led to what seems in retrospect to a relatively simple solution that made our kitchen remodel into so much more. Lauren re-oriented our kitchen within the same space, adding a mere 27 additional square feet, but in so doing completely transformed our home, integrating the outdoor space with the kitchen and living area and allowing natural light to connect the spaces in a way that makes our home feel entirely new. Over the course of the project, we watched Lauren invest his time and attention to every step in the journey, turning the unexpected twists and turns of a remodel into added value.
