About Us

I work across a range of styles and enjoy working with clients to create a garden which fits them perfectly. With over 20 years experience as a professional garden designer and a Royal Horticultural Society Gold Medal, I have a wealth of knowledge and expertise. Living on the coast it is inevitable that many of my designs have a coastal feel, as many of my clients are looking for this. However I thrive on variety. Your garden is highly personal and deeply symbolic. A once ordinary space becomes your extraordinary place. Please note from July 1996 to July 2016 I have traded as Changing Scenes and have now changed my trade name to Garden Design Guru as it is considerably more descriptive of my main service.

I didn't have a fixed idea of what I wanted but Barry was able to get my ideas and turn the design into a a beautiful space. Knowledge of plants and planting excellent. The summer show of plants and colour was lovely with something of interest at different points and times. Planting also supported wildlife with bees and butterflies taking advantage of the the nectar rich flowers into late summer and autumn. Can't wait until spring when the newly planted bulbs will bring in colour before the other plants start to show. All plants and composts are top quality. Sourcing of planters and hard landscaping items all arrived and installed without problems.

We are delighted with the garden design provided by Barry Chambers. We love the final result, which has exceeded our expectations. The garden has been admired by family and friends, when they were able, in these socially distanced times. Barry has completely transformed our garden which was a featureless and bare garden to a wonderful one with different spaces to relax and view the lovely plants and interesting features. From the initial contact through design selection to installation and completion Barry has clearly explained the design process and payment schedule. He took time to understand what we wanted and our expectations for the garden. All through the process Barry ensured that we were involved in the selection of the sub-contractors, i.e. hard landscaping and electricians. Barry excelled when it came to the planting, his choice of plants met the vision for our garden. We would have no hesitation in recommending Barry’s garden design services.

I knew that the garden for my new project would be integral to the success of my house renovation so for the first time ever I sought professional help. Barry spent some time with me understanding what I was looking for. His design totally “hits the brief”, in particular the creation of a sense of space in a relatively small plot. Most people remark that the garden is much bigger than they remember it. The garden is comprehensively lit to Barry’s specification and looks just amazing at night. I couldn’t be more pleased. I’ve attached a before and after photo (my builder did the hard landscaping to Barry’s design). Barry did all the soft landscaping and planting.

Barry designed our garden from scratch, his first task being the construction of a hand made lattice fence, built on site, which forms the long boundary. Barry gave us excellent advice on the planting up all the flowers and shrubs and supervised the planting.He also installed the large areas of decking and the antique brick paved paths. We are delighted with the finished garden and are fortunate to have Barry involved in its expansion and development.

Barry got in touch with me after I posted some photographs of my courtyard site on Houzz. We arranged for him to come and see the space. He had a natural intuitive understanding of what I was wanting to create and suggested some amazing and innovative ideas. I am going to embrace much of what he proposed as well as mixing in some of my own ideas to create a Turkish themed courtyard. I would recommend him for his professional approach, expertise and understanding of what the client wants.

I hired Barry from Changing Scenes to help me with the planting in my garden in time for the Westbourne Open Gardens. He did a wonderful job and I would highly recomend him. He is easy to work with and incredibly knowlegable about all aspects of design, structure and plant classiication. He has given us lots of advice and help with our existing garden plants and added lots of new ones to complement the existing design.

As the first owners of a new 5 bed roomed house we commissioned Barry from Changing Scenes to design a garden to live up to our new home. During the brief we discussed the needs of our 2 teenage boys, the desire for 3D interest within the garden and my passion for plants in general. There were some challenges on the site including the need to use the area of a steep bank and to provide screening from neighbours at the end of the garden. All this was taken into account and he came up with a beautiful design including curves, terraces and a large pergola. This included planting plans and detailed technical plans for landscaping. Great care was taken to create detail and proportion in sympathy with the house and later on to source matching materials. Barry then helped with the tendering process for the landscaper, oversaw the whole project, and personally selected and planted all the plants. The end result was stunning-a stylish family garden which in now an extension of our home and a year down the line looks surprisingly mature. Very happy customers!

Barry from Changing Scenes Garden Design designed our garden in Autumn 2013. We found him to be very friendly, polite and reliable. His knowledge of plants is vast and very impressive. He offered three rough designs and we took the good parts from all three and then we had a great design. He sourced the samples of materials so we could look at them before any work started. Barry has an eye for detail and all work must be to be a high standard. We found him to be honest and trustworthy and a "nice guy". The work was carried out by another company (who were also excellent) with Barry overseeing any design queries. We decided to do the planting ourselves which was hard work but very rewarding. We are very pleased with our garden and we would recommend Barry to any potential clients. Thank you Barry.

Our project was to develop a medium-sized garden, four miles from the Sussex coast, which faces south-west and suffers strong winds, lethal for many plant species, Barry Chambers of Changing Scenes, of Bognor Regis, successfully designed a colourful garden of raised flower beds, mature trees, large shrubs, a vegetable and sitting area and a stone beach with seaside plants, creating a frame for views across fields and glorious sunsets. The work was put out to tender to about five firms, with husband and wife team Keymer Landscapes, of Barnham, Bognor Regis, who I would also recommend, selected. Barry Chambers' knowledge of plants, and their survival in these conditions, is excellent, as is his ability to explain his choices without pretension. The construction and gardening was hands-on supervised by Barry who regularly returns, post-project, to add plants and check the progress of the garden and its maintenance.
