hallway colour help

I really need help with painting my darkish hallway ( at this time of year anyway) , bright porch and bright landing. Currently it’s painted in a Johnstone’s copy of ammonite which looks blue ! I have half painted slaked lime 105 on the small landing over dimpse and it looks cold !! I have shaded white and shadow white in my living room and slaked lime deep in my kitchen. Slaked lime mid is a contender but I fear it will be cold like the slaked lime it even go a bit pink as I have a brown floor which throws up warm tones in the hallway but at the same time , the ammonite looks dreadful - cold and blue.

I have considered school house white but I’m wary of magnolia ! It looks nice downstairs but muddy upstairs!! It’s so difficult hence why I’m turning to Houzz as my head is close to bursting point! Btw I had to go with shaded white in my lounge and not slaked lime deep as the latter went cold / very grey in a nasty way in the shadows. Shaded white is Perfect however.

Joanna by Little Greene is a really good neutral that doesn't look too yellow and has a wink of red in. Maybe worth a try.

I haven’t tried that one but have heard of it. Thank you. With it having red, I would be a bit put off by peachiness. I want a good Greige colour . I think the school house white will work as shown here against the bluey ammonite copy. Excuse lockdown children’s fingerprints ! Thinking slaked lime mid or shadow white if not ... do you think shadow white might work ? Slaked lime mid is a tad too pale for my liking.

I would go with the light grey tones, as this will create a nice neutral overall base colour. Possibly even lighter than the image attached. This will allow you to bring colour in in other ways, and you will not limited by having to tie in with pink.

Hi everyone, I live in a rented house and I’ve been given permission from the landlord to paint in ’neutrals’ However I have never really been a fan of grey, but this property is restricted to grey carpets which I will probably stick to as painting is my priority cost now, oh and lighting. I will start purchasing rugs later. I love pale soft and warm colours and I really need to brigten up this hallway its so depressing to see the orange I can not explain despite it being a bright happy colour. Can anyone help? Ive attached a pic of a mood board Ive put together and open for paint suggestions. I need a paint colour that wont pull too grey even though its fighting against the forces of north facing and dark grey carpet.

I’ve looked at Joanna and the red is highlighted in this space because of the reddish teak floor. I’m thinking Portland green pale - do you think it would flow with shaded white and slaked lime deep ? Thank you

I find Shadow White looks quite yellow. Joanna looks like unbleached linen, a slight taupey tone to it. Portland Stone is a really good colour, would definitely work with your other colours and go with teak. Neutrals are way harder than full spectrum colours aren't they!

Oh thanks! Portland stone is so my ideal colour on Instagram - I’ll get a sample. Hopefully it won’t look too cold ... yes I’ve got slaked lime, slaked lime mid ,slaked lime deep ,shadow white and shaded white and they all look different on different walls - headache inducing ! I love the shadow white where I have it but I don’t think I would work in the hall and landing as it is prob too yellow as you say !

Its all dependent on the amount of natural light and the effect of LEDs etc. Where well live we are surrounded by trees and they cast a really odd coloured light into the house. I have to say though. I find Little Greene paint much better than F&B so hope the Portland Stone works out.

Would anyone , maybe Marylee (?) as you’ve been SO helpful in the past, be able to confirm if school house white is warmer than Portland stone pale ? Thank you .

To my eye, Portland Stone contains a bit more red in it that School House white (this doesn't mean it reads as red, but just contains it). However, the Portland Stone pale is lighter and so may feel a bit cooler. Colour temperature is not something we can measure, it's a feel thing so I would go with what looks right.

Thanks again - I’ll grab a sample of Portland stone and see. I think you might be right with it feeling cooler . I like sch house on the lining paper just fearful of magnolia !!

It’s so similar to slipper satin , I don’t see the point of both colours being on the colour chart . Apparently, sch house is a tiny bit more Brown.

Hi - Both colours belong to the Yellow Hue Family.

Portland Stone Pale is both a little lighter & a little more neutral than School House White. But it also sits a little more anti-clockwise towards the Yellow-Red Hue Family, so by comparison may read slightly warmer with more possibility of peachiness to its warmth.

That being said, because School House White is a little darker a a little more colourful, the extra bump of Chroma is likely what you need to bust through any tendency to shadow or gloom in the hallway & still read as a colour.

Test both in the more shadowed areas as well as the light. Either can be prone to shifting purple-ish in certain imbalanced lighting situations, so see how they behave for you. Again, of the two, Portland Stone pale may be more inclined to shift.

So useful as always , I’m leaning towards sch house but will try Portland. I’m thinking Portland pale may be too light ... thank you colour me happy and Mary lee . I will let you know the outcome. Interestingly , in the living room shaded white is softer , warmer and less grey than slaked lime deep. It’s south east facing . The slaked lime deep really didn’t work in that space.
