I've been planning a home theater to be situated in our one car garage ever since someone replaced the garage door with a wall. There's a loft that would make a perfect place for the projector, and I could install appropriate insulation to mask the noises of the street outside. I want the theme to be "Drive In Movie" which, admittedly, isn't the lovely old theater theme of the majority of home theaters. I think I might have opposition if I obtain bench seats from the local auto wrecking yard to keep it in theme, what do you think? No images yet, sorry.

"Theme" Home Cinemas seem pretty rare these days, you're right. Comfort and convenience as well as a good dose of oppulence is generally what seems to be the order of the day. I believe you could probably achieve a marriage of comfort and theme if you chose the right mix of interior design, seating and maybe even theme memorabilia accents.
Be sure that in trying to create a unique space you don't compromise the viewing and listening experience. That remains the cardinal purpose of the home cinema.

Thanks for the comments and the offer of assistance. I will have to negotiate the use of the space with my daughter. She also wants to use the space, and since we're both artists, her suggestion of a dedicated studio seems like a good one too. BUT, if I get my drive in movie dream going I'll be sure to take photos of it.

I know a lot of people have said about trying to keep it light, but actually a darker feature wall (warm rich grey paint if you can't afford wallpaper or want to keep it simple), along with a bunch of mirrors behind that sofa would bring it to life. Having had small victorian homes with dark rooms and tried to keep everything pale, I realised that sometimes there is no point in fighting it! The yellow sofa (which I love - where did u get it from??) will really pop against a darker wall. Otherwise for wallpaper - there are a few websites online that you can buy from in price order and by colour. I've also been looking and you might find a pale background with some striking pattern (darker) pattern would really stand out (rather than going as pale as your curtains)

How about swapping the rooms around. Move the TV room where your office/ library is now and build your library shelving around the walls in this other room. That room has more 'uninterrupted' walls (although I can't see how low the windows are) so it's easier to arrange the sofas. You can customise the bookshelves to fit the middle room, can already use the built-ins around the window, etc. (I'd suggest to include radiator masks matching the wood/ paint of the shelves). You then wouldn't have to get rid of the fireplace surround. And if you fix it and place an old leather armchair next to it, you could build a fire and cosy up with a book till late March! Or you can hang a retractable screen above the opening between the rooms and buy a projector - ta da! your own cinema room!

Hi Catherine, will this be a dedicated cinema room only as there are many options you can choose from and of course will depend on what sort of budget you have to spend and how far you want to go with your cinema room. There are many different things you can incorporate into your room such as projection, mood LED lighting, audio systems, smart home automation (allowing you to control all your lighting and audio visual equipment from an iPad or iPhone for example) so just depends on how far you want to go with your project. A couple of examples of cinema rooms are below for you. You could even look at having home theatre seating to give you a real feel of being at the movies too!
