Help with color scheme for kitchen.

I'm re-doing my kitchen from scratch. I have already decided I want grey shaker style cabinets and integrated appliances. I have my heart set on metro/subway white tiles for the walls/splash back. What i need help with is the color of the tiles for the floor and color of quartz worktop. Lastly any ideas for lighting? I don't want spotlights. What i would like is something a little different/quirky. Thanks!

Hi,

You can go in two directions here. Either softer or cooler. If softer, I'd go for Crema Marfil marble or porcelain tiles on the floor. They have soft cream/beige veining. For the worktop I'd go for similar tones. See image below.
If you prefer cooler tones I would go for darker quartz worktop. On floors I would go for dark wood imitating tiles or granite. There are lots of types of granite and so are only available per slabs. Always request a sample before you commit to some purchase.
Regarding the lighting maybe consider mixing metals with your hardware - nickel, copper, antique gold. And also mix finishes matt, brushed, polished, honed. I have attached some examples. I have Lighting library on my Pinterest, you can have a look there for inspiration.

With grey shaker cabinets and white metro tiles the world is your oyster! You could keep it all very neutral or add a splash of colour or pattern to the floor. Browse the photos on Houzz to find some kitchens you like and you'll soon see what styles you are drawn to.

I'd recommend a light colour for the worktop as dark ones tend to show up every tiny crumb so you'll be constantly wiping it down.

In terms of lighting, it's so important to make sure the lighting works well for you. Make sure you have plenty of light in front of you on the work surfaces. Go for quirky wall lights or a row of little pendants, or if you have wall cabinets then opt for under cabinet lighting. Then you can choose a statement pendant in the middle to give general light to the room and acts more as a feature than practical lighting.

Hi Lucy. The kitchen looks quite a grey blue on my screen. I would go for a copper kettle and toaster. Also brighten the worktop by adding potted herbs and some wooden boards. I would then look at shades of orange, coral, terracotta or blush for either chairs or cushions for the chairs. I think an orangey tan leather would also work as would a copper chair. I might go for a sisal rug to add some texture and lighten the floor a little, you can get ones with both honey and grey tones in or instead add pattern (depending on chair choice). I'd also add a large potted plant in the corner by the bay and utility. Art with blues in and a touch of an orangey colour too.

I had my kitchen by Howdens and I noticed silly things like cupboards hinged the wrong way or odd sized wall cupboards ie. left had was 450 and right hand was 500. Luckily I'm a designer so picked up on it so I'd advise double checking all sizes and hinges etc. I would definitely start neutral and see how you feel once everything is in. Painting a wall takes no time at all and better to get it right than try do everything at once. I have a blackboard wall in my kitchen, everyone thought I was mad doing a wall in black but it looks very effective and doesn't effect the light at all.

Yes Jonathan, it’s really annoying. They won’t do any amendments to the layout despite it being impractical and dangerous in parts (cupboards directly behind doors that swing back etc) So do you think the light worktop in the bottom picture or the grey worktop in the top picture? I’m just worried about the overall feeling being dark as it’s not a bright room (neighbours brick wall 1m from window!) I really prefer the light one, but I can’t convince myself it won’t look weird with the white tiles...
