Position of fire surround

Strange question, but we have a slate hearth which will be for the log burner when it's fitted, and I want to get the Louis shaped plaster fire surround I mentioned in one of my other posts.
However the smallest one will sit about 1.5cm off the edge of either side of the hearth if I sit it on it. (The hearth isn't flush you see unfortunately!) which might look odd. We still have to edge around the hearth so it might be ok but otherwise, I could get a larger one and set it so that it sits either side of the hearth ie on the wood floor?
What do you think is best? I've never had a surround before so I've no idea!

Comments (10)Hi KP, the Arts & Crafts movement came out as an alternative to the fussy Victorian house decor style, although a lot of Arts & Crafts is quite OTT still. Your fireplace has a bit of both I think! Go with your heart, if you really do not consider it beautiful then so be it. Maybe a complete change of paint colour would be an option? Comments (11)I honestly don't think it will be a huge deal to have the fireplace to the side (I'm usually very OCD about having things symetrical) if the fire surround is going also that sortof means it won't be such a huge chunky thing and you could tone it down.. of you brought a wood burner you could get one of those long tall ones and then almost turn that corner into the 'cosy' area- I'm afraid I don't have an image of this but my friend has done it and it looks really good you can still have the sofas boardering the room the whole way round but just have the log burner in the corner...See More

9 years agoTani, I would buy a new hearth; you can get it quite cheap as a slate tile (just buy one tile in the size you need!)

Are you sure the surround doesn't come with its own hearth? some do. Don't forget you are going to need to glue and seal the surround; our builder used some basic silicone filler to do it (and did it badly too!)
