I personally think you should keep it painted. It would be a terrible job to get the paint off and maybe you will never get it right again if it all goes wrong. You will have to know what you are doing before you start that job. Take a look at these pics, maybe you could get some ideas from them. To make a room feel cosy and warm make sure you have interlined luxury fabric curtains as a starter. In the green pic, I'm thinking shades to match your suite, disregarding the ceiling obviously! I happen to like the gold too.

Hi Jean, Love your mock up and to be honest most people struggle to visualise so you definitely aren't alone. To answer your questions: Do I 1. go different lights each area because ceiling and wise they are different areas. 2. Match the kitchen and dining areas, 3. match all three Personally I would ensure that all three are consistent in style. For example if this is going to be a modern living space, then I would stick with modern lighting (you can break the rules with one show-off pendant, perhaps over the dining table, but it would be a feature). Over the bar, due to the hob area, it isn't very practical to have pendants. You could have a surface mounted piece to make use of the fitting you have, but in this case I would consider lowering the ceiling throughout the kitchen to add downlights and use the hood as a source of lighting too. If that option is just too expensive (I totally understand) and you have to use what you have got, then a long or double strip of track lights which you can angle in directions for cooking would be my choice. It will also give you the output and practical lighting you are looking for. Another take but less expensive would be to just lower the ceiling above the bar (around the beam - extending either side). If you did lower the ceiling to add downlights I would extend it past the beam, just enough to fit a row in for the bar, this side of the beam. Many people are afraid of lowering the ceiling as they feel it will make the space "darker". In this case I feel like you read the height lower anyway, due to the location of the beam. Having a clean / neat / functional lighting solution would be my priority / preference here. That means you are pretty free to do what you want around the rest of the areas too and the change in ceiling height will add to a more theatrical wow when walking into the dining space from the kitchen, especially if you hang one or two focal pendants above the dining table. When it comes to the seating / living area around the corner, make use of floor standing lamps (in the same style, ie, country, modern, traditional as the other areas). They don't have to be the same colour, each space can have its own mood, but I would consider whether in each case you want to make the lighting a "feature" or not. So blend it in if you don't want it to stand out, and contrasting colour or shape for "look at me". I hope that helped you Jean, good luck and definitely let us know what you came up with in the end! I need to buy the lights for a large flat rooflight 4m wide. I was thinking of an LED strip, but happy to consider other options. What do I need to consider? Do the lights get fitted in a lip nearer the actual ceiling, or higher up towards the glass? what do I need to consider? Someone mentioned you need to find room for a transformer or something? If this is the case where do they normally go when lighting something like this, and do they need to be accessible to change at some point? Any and all advice would be gratefully received, and any pictures or assistance of what to purchase in the way of lip, lights etc.. Thank you so much (I know nothing about lights) I am having an electrician fit them, but i'm responsible for purchasing the fittings and fixtures.

My bathroom has no windows - how do I get some light in there

Could you have a window with obscured glass or sandblasted glass? I would look into this first as lots of houses I have lived in have had the same issue with bathrooms looking directly onto neighbours properties, all have had frosted or sandblasted glass. My last house had a bathroom with no window and we didn't change it as we were there only briefly. It had pure white tiles which made it feel somewhat cold, I would avoid these. Something like a textured off white tile may be better (Porcelanosa have lots of choice). In terms of lighting, the quality of light is really important. LED's with a high CRI rating will give a much nicer light quality than cheap yellow or blue tinged ones. If you can't put in a window then perhaps hang mirrored units in the alcove and have the space packed out so that they fit flush with the walls either side. I would leave a space below them to utilise the shelf.
