Stairs - stripes on the wall?

What do you think of wallpaper on the wall leading up the stairs that is stripy? Will that open it open or close it in?

Stripes lead your eye- if hung vertically they make the space seem taller- consider if that is the look you want or if it will make the space seem too tall and therefore not wide enough.
In short- avoid stripes if the space is tight- otherwise I like them.

Yes be careful - use your local independant retailer - not a man in a van ! Or large national - to get a great choice and professional advise . And taking your wallpaper sample with you to the showroom will help you narrow down the choice and then you must take a few samples home ! Some shops may even let you take home rugs and runners to try ! Just a word of warning if you have any turns in your stairs and your looking at a strip carpet the pattern may not match - ask the shop to send someone around to measure and advice on your stairs - Parfitts carpets don't charge for this and will give you free professional advice.

It's a very bold look so I think if you're going to go for it then go for it with the bolder black and white design. Try moving both of your sofas forward a few inches to give the curtains a little space. You could add a baroque style mirror on the dining wall to zone that area, perhaps a round or round'ish one. I'd also accessorise the table. If you wanted to expand the look further than switch the White cabinet for a Louis style one in a bold colour which would pop (hate that word but can't think of another!) against the wallpaper

For an office, I'd go with shelving on the wall at the back in your picture. It looks as if you have enough room by the window - and could always reduce the depth nearer the window if need be. Paperbacks need very little depth. If most of the shelving was around 200mm that'd make the bulkhead a bit less dramatic. Then I'd build a big bench seat over the remaining bulkhead, pretty much where Wumi has drawn a desk but not extending over the floor.. Remaining slope could be nice for lounging against.
