Kitchen help please! Help with colours etc for a small update.
Comments (31)I had a similar situation in a house I moved into years ago. I did a quick fix of painting all of the walls, woodword and the cupboards the same shade of cream. Sounds a bit OTT but it really knocked back the cupboards, which in all honesty are not something you want to make a feature out of, and created a calmness to the whole space. In your case, I would go for an off white so that the gang plug wires, radiator pipes and covers hiding the wires for the extractor fan etc., are disguised as much as possible -- that will tie in with the palest of the tiles in the splash back, and then you will have a pretty basic colour scheme of a very place colour and the dark worktop, fireplace and floor, which will stand out more. I think you need more storage with doors -- that bookshelf isn't doing anything for the kitchen. If you could get something in there that could hide lots of clutter -- even if just something cheap from IKEA, that would help greatly. Or work something around the filing cabinet that you have? A huge cheap mirror over the fireplace would bounce some light around too. If you don't want to go for undercupboard lighting, and if you have enough plug points, how about some lamps on the worktop, especially at the FF end with a floor standing lamp at the end with the chair. For the table, I would go for a table cloth and reupholster the chairs if they are not to your taste. A new blind in a much fresher colour would be great. Depending on the colour of your filing cabinet (if you use it), I think a petrol blue could add a nice vintage vibe to the chimney breast, and make more of a feature of it. I would try and go down a vintage/slightly industrial route rather than country. You may have some stuff lurking around that you could use, once you have got the base colours right -- currently it just feels a little cluttered and a bit of a mish mash. Best of luck. Looking forward to seeing some after shots :)...See MoreIn need of honest advice
Comments (95)OK all, I have a website!! http://www.lucianastatues.com/ It's almost finished, I haven't started on the blog or added an 'About' page, as I'm not sure what to write yet. It went live a couple of days ago but then had some glitches, and the absent-minded geek (I have his approval to call him that) who made the site told me not to advertise it until he takes care of them. Everything is working now; I could say I have 2 websites, as he built another one for me initially that I didn't like that much. It was probably the wet dream of a webdesigner, with lots of features and pop-ups and hexagonal inserts (don't ask...!) but just too fancy for my needs. So I told him to keep it simple, sat down with him for a few hours and hurray!! - I think he's done a great job. This site is just straightforward and easy in my opinion, simple to use and with large photos that help with seeing the details. I would appreciate some feedback though, so please let me know what you think. I'm still not sure about prices, I mostly charge by how tall the figure is and how much I like it:)). Next week is gallery touring, I'm going to Birmingham tomorrow to a craft fair, but mostly to look and maybe buy supplies, not to sell http://www.thenec.co.uk/whatson/hobbycrafts# My main problem at the moment is that I ran out of stock! :)) I sold a few more things, but they were commissioned, so they don't appear on the site. Didn't have time to make a lot of new pieces, so some of the stuff that's there is mostly things I would've liked to keep or had on reserve, but now decided to sell them. I knew starting all this will leave me less time to play...... Plus my geek gave me a task list with stuff to do to promote the website, and I'm supposed to write that blog every couple of days..... Anyway, my gratitude again for your help and support. As I said, I'd appreciate some feedback on the site. I was thinking Houzz users should get discounts... again, please use prolux@gmail.com or the form on the site to get in touch with me. Thank you!!...See MoreWhat do you want to read about on Houzz this year?
Comments (53)I can't help but speculate that perhaps the reason so many houses featured are London based or more high-end properties is because most of the case studies are uploaded by architecture or design professionals who employ professional photographers to show off the finished results. These services aren't cheap and I don't imagine these companies get too many requests from owners of smaller 30's - 70's era homes, especially from outside the capital, because the homeowners won't see a return on the investment. I would have thought requesting design-savvy home owners load more of their own photo's would help bridge the gap. Perhaps on the next newsletter you can ask homeowners to consider contributing any photos of spaces they are particularly proud of?...See MoreWhich front door?
Comments (34)That’s a tall door! Now tell me to shut up if you want, but how about making the skylight above the door bigger so in effect coming down in height to fit a shorter more standard door? Is that a crazy idea? Of course it would mean you get a carpenter or talented handyman to enlarge the skylight frame and fit a larger window. Of course we know how hard it is to get good trades people, and it will add to the cost, in which case a bespoke door may be the cheaper option! How frustrating. As to colours, I love the sage green because I adore green in all its forms, but how gorgeous would the door look in that bright orange or yellow? They would all look good! Hope you find your door soon and I will ask my brother who he uses on his builds. We are in Herts if that’s near you at all....See Morealant1000
