Dining Chairs for Breakfast Nook - Too big and too bright?
1. Too bright (but in theory could repaint or just get used to it)?
2. Too bulky can't fit 5 chairs (family of 5) comfortably and you can't see the pretty base of my table well (although I could just put 4 there and keep an extra elsewhere since we don't all eat at that table at the same time that often?)
3. Slightly too big to be comfortable.
Should I just resell them (cost for return shipping is prohibitive) or do I try to make them work?

Comments (12)crikey excuse me i'm just feeling extremely jealous here. the brick fireplace recessed into the wall - who did that? that's incredible. go darker on walls. check out those sample mags about sofas from DFS and see which style u like or feel is you. eg country or modern etc. etc. what's the view from the window by day (and night of course!) i think u need a carpetmaybe of coir or suchlike, its a hardlined room, so think balancing that with colour accents, the shape of the room is calling for some kind of yellow in my view but that's a tricky colour, but it would 'lift' the hard-edged thing. live with it for a bit (soz you've probably already done that); layout suggestions: dining table could be put alongside radiator, two sofas, opposite each other, placement = as if they were railway tracks leading to the fireplace. (ie at 90 degrees from teh fireplace wall; TV could be wall mounted over radiator with shelf to prevent heat from radiator reaching tv. have fun choosing bold patterned curtains in brick/red/golden/some dark lines?charcoal definition lines/ anyway think 'balancing, echoing teh fireplace with its lively warm natural strong brick colours and pattern....See MoreMy kitchen is too boring!

If you go with orange then the print you have bought could go in with the scheme. For wallpapers have a look at Romo or Harlequin they have some lovely designs. I do think the dining area could take a feature wall so do look at that, it will define that area. Comments (15)Oh man, I decided to brave Ikea on a Saturday and sad to say that Martin was quite uncomfortable! I mean, the seat itself was fine and nothing a nice seat cushion couldn't fix, but the back rest felt like its designed so that you'll have to sit perfectly upright to be remotely comfortable in it. I suppose its good for posture if nothing else, but not something one wants for a dining chair! The Svenbertil was a lot more comfy for about the same size, though a bit more expensive. I was thinking of perhaps a couple of smaller side tables instead of an actual coffee table. Not sure yet. I think I'll have to wait until the sofa gets delivered and I have it in the space before I can really decide. Generally not a fan of glass table surfaces as I can get a bit obsessed over fingerprints and glass just attracts them! I really liked this coffee table when I saw it in the showroom, then I saw the price tag. Yeah, visually on the plan I don't think the long table would work that well in terms of the flow of the space, and I think I'm going to stick with a round one. Surprisingly, the space seemed to be able to fit a D100+/- 5cm relatively well after I folded some towels and tape out the area. The Ikea one you pointed out seems ideal in terms of size, but being all white, seemed a tad boring... though I suppose I could have different chairs to mix it up a bit... a pair in white and a pair in oak. 9 years agolast modified: 9 years agoHere is a table that is glazed with brown. You can add more or less glaze that what they have done on this table. Your chairs would be slightly lighter than what this example looks like.
When you go to replace the glass top, make sure you purchase a tempered glass. This glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared with normal glass and is hard to scratch.
An old fix for scratches in glass tops, is to take toothpaste the has polish granules in it. With a soft cloth and the tooth paste you can had buff it out. There are also glass repair kits you can buy or hire a windshield glass repair company to fill the scratches.

9 years agoYou have a great colour before you there and a window space that cries with potential why not solve the problem by considering a window seat which your kids will love and add a few more bright colours such as limegreen or yellow. This idea will work with either a long or round table (see the images below). However, the water cooler definately needs a new home if possible freeing up more space in the long run. Carefully chosen and bright colorful rugs, drapes and accessories will also help the overall look. Good luck I look forward to seeing where this goes :)

A - dining chairs are too bright, I think they are great!
B - A beautiful vinyl wall covering on the two walls.
C - Vinyl has come a long way. Maharam, Holly Martin, Schumacher will all give you ideas, and most of the contract fabric and vinyl comes in 54 - 60 inch wide.
D - There is also a firm - Modern Fabrics.com, and they have a huge selection of fabric from a variety of locations for pillow covers, windows, drapes, bed covers etc.
A suggestion:
You will want to pick and collect all your finishes, fabrics, photos of shutters, mirrors, shades etc. and bring them into the home. I would paint many of the walls, or wallcover, there is too much white. The table and chairs are great, and if there was color around them, they would tone down immensely. Try it, order some samples.
Maharam, Holly Martin, Schumacher, Benjamin Moore Wheel, Carpets on line, or ABC carpet in NY City. Lamps Plus, Artemide, Lightolier, Jensen and Shade Shop. This should help get you on your way.
E. A good piece of foam board 3 will most likely do, and you can place all your colors in one location, from entry, and your Hello table, to the bathroom and shower curtain. It is good to get an idea laid out and do this as you can.
F. Collection
At Home Depot in the paint section, they sell small sheets of drywall for you to paint a section in order to see this in the different light. I suggest two, ceiling and wall. You will be surprised how different the ceiling paint looks. Your colors could also be yellow and red. The first item we look at is the floors, this is the hardest color to get. If there is a carpet or tile etc. From here you can pick your colors, and there should be a pattern of how they interface. Having a simple hallway with a grey/blue theme will bring you into the dining area, and then back out to the X might change color or just darken or lighten. There are lots of ways to add a bit with some molding and a piece of fabric in the center, trim white, and wall X. As long as there is a color to bring us through the house and not from a brown room to a green.

An oriental print carries many colors and lets you get away with a lot.

I do not remember the floor, but a round carpet under the table is great. Any carpet center will cut this for you, and a steel grey, or the color you pick, they have hundreds of color. Going to the local carpet center may cost $50.00 more, but you can return in a few years for another round. This way you can also shake out crumbs.
In this pattern, I would use the darker blue for the carpet, the color ivory for the trim, and a blue grey for the walls in the kitchen. There is a firm called The Shade Shop.com and they have great solar shades that let you see out and people can see in a bit. However, this shade I used on 38 windows all facing the sun, and cut my electric bill in half. I love them.
Here is a sample of an oriental wall covering with a bit of color, from here you can pick any color.
And, on the bottom is all the rage. Dismiss the plant. Wood on the wall, and a paint (blocking) in the center line. the table would be the center at 29" high, and 18" of paint with 9" above table height and 9" below. You would then paint the same 18" in the corner, again 9" and 9". This seems a bit modern, but you could pull it off.
window - Using a geometic wood on the window is a great idea, you can leave it open or you can put a simple white behind it, to see out a bit. However, it does not move. Plantation, not real wood, in white are perfect and you have a large window. I say not real wood since I have had them, and they needed to be painted, did not clean well, and the new ones are great. All of mine opened when I wanted them to, they hung like doors with hinges. Or you can have them pull up like blinds Hunter Douglas has a large selection of wall coverings.
mirror - I like the concept of a mirror over the wall covering, it reflect back out.
doorway
If you put plantation shutters on the opening into the room, they can add them to either side of the opening, the folding type. They can be put inside, and on one side, just a 1/2 for looks, but it does add to the room. This would mean a plantation shutter on the window. This gives your home an entirely different look.
An opportunity to close this up would be nice, and give you a bit of privacy.
For lighting, I would go back to white, this is not a dining room, so I would stay away from too high style a lamp. I like this one.
On the table, I would put a center swivel, it is easier with children to get everything off the table onto one simple swivel unit. This is actually a very lovely ceramic, only it does not show up well here, it is on the site.
Lazy susan
I suggest you add the hallway into the painting, and some lighting, perhaps one track. Juno is a good looking hat for the bulb. The way the pictures are now they may fall as the small one gets larger, a long ledge with a trim 3" high will give you the same concept, and the square corner as you come around the corner will be gone.
