Georgian lounge

We have an early 1700's house.... North facing square lounge with one long sash window and shutters. Marble fireplace.... Want to create room to enjoy sitting in, no TV, just reading, chatting, resting, music etc.... Thinking warm Frey, heather, ... But where to start with any inspiration? Help!

love this fireplace. A mantel would really distract from its elegance. Yes, absolutely do not let the painting rest on the surround. the width of the one already there is better proportioned than the one on the left. the desk is beautiful but needs to echo the fireplace by placing a taller lamp on its left, where the poinsetta is. Drop the painting above it, lower, & gradually add two more paintings above, (just play!) so you have 3 which will echo the line of the fireplace. The arrangement within the fireplace needs to reference the lovely stone & I would find a simple large glass jar & fill with tall cow parsley, grasses or anything country & natural in season. Tall lilies if you must. Do not forget the power & softness of foliage... Go for a walk & find an interesting piece of bark or stone to put to the left of the tall Glass jar or both to sustain the always decorate in 3's rule! (Find some greenery while you are at it!). Above all do not ruin the simple beauty of your room..I envy you your fireplace, a few easy tweeks & you are there!! you could do it today!

firstly I love the vibe of your room colour glorious and the chairs and tan sofa are fab. I would try and balance the sitting arrangement so centred around the fireplace. I would defo have a rug perhaps in golds citrus shades very decedent perhaps geometric pattern to go with the moody walls and pick up pieces like mirror and photo frames in gold and copper tones. I like the bay bare and let the light flood in or gorgeous sheer voiles. little milk stools are lovely touch so would keep them. Drinks trolley with beautiful cut glass decanters and glass bouncing light across the room. why stop there over sized crystal lamps and chandeliers with lovely shades. I would be careful with art work as my clash with strong colour on walls may not even need anything more. beautful coffee table in crystal with gilt frame adorned with lovely bits and pieces that reflect your life and personality. and perhaps a tall glass shelf unit with similar frame. old books throws. im getting carried away sorry but would love to have a go at this project have fun that's the most important thing I feel and only invest inpieces you totally love because then you will always love them and can always move them around to refresh or even style another room

Hi Tidesreach, If you wanted to change the sofa then the best way would be to use a second hand items from free cycle or eBay. You will be surprised what you can get with a bit of research. Failing that, you need to tie the sofa's into your over all design. Lighten the ceiling with a coat of white and the walls with a colour to compliment the sofas as best you can. The room is in good shape and it appears to be only cosmetic changes that are needed, so I would consider simplifying the whole design as follows: · Paint: You mention grey as one of your preferred colours, so I would try a sample of either Farrow or Ball’s Elephant’s Breath paint or Strong White to see what looks best sits best in the room. Both are contemporary favourites but will flatter the space and alter the atmosphere. Otherwise, aim for off-whites with a creamy, yellow tone to encourage warmth. · Furniture: Purchase furniture with legs to encourage the flow of light and space but if possible do not block the lovely elongated windows. Add a feature Chesterfield ottoman to centre the room and soften the new space. · Window treatment: Instead of curtains, I would actually use sheer voiles across the windows and have Roman blinds in place for the colder evenings to enhance the sumptuous, traditional feel. · Pieces: Add a large timeless mirror above the fireplace to bounce light around the room and maintain that area as the focal point. · Lighting: Work with illuminating the light through the room not only via a pendant light (consider a glass chandelier here) as this will only provide task lighting. You also want to aim for ambient lighting via glass base lamps in the corners and free standing tall lamps. · Soft furnishings: Apply hints of mustard and teal into the soft furnishings such as the cushions will complement the tones from the parquet flooring.
