New courtyard I've just done it myself...

What about a really large mirror that you could just lean against that wall in the dining area.. Something with a frame that's painted the same colour as the wall would really give an interesting focus along with light and the illusion of a bigger room.. Even really big rooms look good with huge mirrors.. Ebay has a good online mirror shop that sells mirrors of all designs up to 8ft.. It would add a dramatic backdrop to the dining area and work beautifully throughout the day. For the other side, living room side, you could create a really interesting shelving artwork with that corner next to the window.. If you were to get some box type shelves and paint them the colour of the walls and possibly some in an accent colour... you could fix them to the wall and have nooks and interesting levels to place nice pieces on and some perhaps that swivel on hidden hinges, so they can pivot and close.. If you want to hide some things... You create a textured piece of wall art that also has a function... You could also carry this theme into the room behind the sofa just in part.. There is a strong geometric theme with your sofa and cubes and thinking of how to apply this aesthetic to other areas of the room... So using the box idea to create a screen and shelving system, that both adds to creating a separate room divider/bookcase/art instillation. It's an artistic way to create bespoke shelving which can be accessed from both sides.. It still needs to be quite open in order to see through to the both sides... You could have boxes with backs which then become open as they continue upwards to become a more transparent look.. I have tried to find you some images to show you what I mean but you could use all 3 as a point of inspiration to create a bespoke look if you liked the idea...... A sheepskin for the back of the sofa and some lovely cushions would be really fantastic too.. : ))...See MoreSmall living room / diner is a blank canvas... help!
Comments (5)Hey, Gemma. How's it going? Are you able to post some more pictures of the space, so we can see it from other angles and how it ties to other rooms (especially the kitchen)? Also, forgive me for asking, but where is the current dining table? Your eye is similar to mine in the choices you made and my living/ dining area is similar so I can certainly relate. It's difficult to know where to start because you're lucky enough to have a blank slate. I think all your ideas are good. I know you're changing your sofa which is good as the chaise element blocks the eye's flow to the light/ window. Something with long legs, with 2 seats - possible a loveseat - would also help to minimise the footprint. I agree with the paint colours. I'd probably paint the whole wall, in case you wanted to change things around at some point. It can also be very difficult to pull off, and especially with varying lights. How would you like the split to be between the dining and living areas? In one of your ideabook photos you have the 'zones' approach at 50/50 but I'm not sure if that's something you were going to carry through or whether the dining space would play a less prominent role. All that said, I think all your ideas are spot on and the space promises to look great....See MoreNew build 1BR help (living, dining, hallway areas)
Comments (15)Oh man, I decided to brave Ikea on a Saturday and sad to say that Martin was quite uncomfortable! I mean, the seat itself was fine and nothing a nice seat cushion couldn't fix, but the back rest felt like its designed so that you'll have to sit perfectly upright to be remotely comfortable in it. I suppose its good for posture if nothing else, but not something one wants for a dining chair! The Svenbertil was a lot more comfy for about the same size, though a bit more expensive. I was thinking of perhaps a couple of smaller side tables instead of an actual coffee table. Not sure yet. I think I'll have to wait until the sofa gets delivered and I have it in the space before I can really decide. Generally not a fan of glass table surfaces as I can get a bit obsessed over fingerprints and glass just attracts them! I really liked this coffee table when I saw it in the showroom, then I saw the price tag. Yeah, visually on the plan I don't think the long table would work that well in terms of the flow of the space, and I think I'm going to stick with a round one. Surprisingly, the space seemed to be able to fit a D100+/- 5cm relatively well after I folded some towels and tape out the area. The Ikea one you pointed out seems ideal in terms of size, but being all white, seemed a tad boring... though I suppose I could have different chairs to mix it up a bit... a pair in white and a pair in oak.
