Living room and small garden
Comments (51)hi, We are having a family reunion this July, and on the first day we've planned a picnic for approximately 200 family members and friends. It will be held on the grounds of my weekend home that was built in 1912. so I decided to create an outside living room and dining room. and I wanted it to blend in with the greenery of the grounds. so what I did, was took old furnishings that I wasn't using or I had stored up and transformed them into outside furniture. for instance, I took an old sofa and had in upholstered in a durable canvass type white fabric that's for outside use. I even skirted the sofa. I then used throw pillows of different patterns but using color schemes of turquoise, apple green and yellow. i covered the chairs in patterns of the same colors. i purchase outside rugs in turquoise and white to set the cocktail table on and the dining table. i covered side chairs in bold coordinating fabrics using the same color scheme.. i painted the side tables and dining table, as well as picnic tables in white....using an oil based paint and sealing it with a clear poly coat. i painted the dining server in turquoise, and the dining chairs in a yellow...it looks amazing, fresh, tropical and timeless. so this is something you can consider for your outside space. Comments (27)I really love your room - exciting shapes. You only need one thing to kick-start your imagination. Lose the animal skin and choose one large beautiful multi coloured rug (could be very modern, ethnic, or even antique) to reflect the sofa colours and add cushions to echo the rug colours. This will bring the sofas together and unify the lost space between them. Then the rest will follow naturally; e,g, art, ornaments coffee tables lamps etc;. You might like to think about a radiator cover that stretched across the whole of that wall with a shelf on top and VERY large flat louvres across the entire width. This will make that wall appear to be wider and the full width louvres will accentuate that feel. Above, on the shelf sit lovely modern vases, glass ornaments etc; above that a large stunning piece of art. Good luck - you are lucky to have such an interesting starting point....See MoreHelp on Small flat interiors and storage
Comments (7)Hello Alice, your flat presents a challenge and your ideas look sensible. I wonder though.... since you haven't bought any furniture yet, would you consider having a design that uses built-in furniture. I know you don't want to spend a lot of money but if you need storage you could have lots of hidden storage and you'd certainly make the best use of space. Mirrors are always great for getting the feeling of space and light but if you were to consider the property as a container for living in, there is much that can be done to provide a comfortable and unusual home that will provide everything you wish for. With such a small flat I think it's time to think creatively and not go for the usual! I know I'm not providing any answers here but I hope I've encouraged you to explore all options before buying furniture that isn't ideal for small spaces. Comments (2)I'm not sure what is important to you but would you consider having a big kitchen diner? If so, I would knock through from the kitchen into the reception room to give you more kitchen space and a lovely social area, and then for your living room space, I would use the upstairs reception room. Somewhere you can retreat to! If you're worried that your bedrooms will be too close to the main room and if you don't feel that you would have many people over to enjoy your outside terrace then you could make the upstairs reception room your master bedroom, and the top left bedroom your living room as it is on the same level as the kitchen/diner. Then ultimately the bottom left bedroom could be made into a stunning guest bedroom and make use of the fireplace alcove by using it as a boarder for a large piece of artwork opposite the bed (If that's what you'd like) If you'd like any more planning or design advice, don't hesitate to let me know! Im not sure where you're based but I am an interior designer in and around reading, and I also provide online designs if you aren't local :)...See Moresifstar
